Easter Sunday March 31, 2013 When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. — Colossians 3:4 EASTER ENERGY On Easter morning when the disciples saw the evidence of the Resurrection, they did not at first grasp it. John reports that “they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” We, on the other hand, have both scripture and church tradition to teach us. Jesus Christ’s resurrection is at the core of our Christian faith. All of today’s readings tell us how compelling this event was for the first Christians. There is great energy in all the readings. Peter preaches with authority and conviction. Paul calls for Christians to change their lives. In the Gospel reading we see Peter and John in a footrace to reach Jesus’ tomb and see with their own eyes the evidence that they still could not understand or completely believe. How can some of this Easter energy be restored to us today? Do we let the astonishing news of the Resurrection touch us now? Does it call us to action? To deeper faith? To conversion? What new life will be reborn in us and our parish community this Easter morning? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Deadline for bulletin announcements is 2 p.m. on Tuesday. MASS INTENTIONS Offered for our beloved dead as well as our living ones. Easter eggs have a very ancient pedigree: nature’s perfect package, emblem of new life, dyed and decorated and given as gifts in ancient Egypt, Rome, China, and Persia. Just as the long hard winter is over, the egg bursts with promise of life and nourishment. Long ago, Christians came to see the egg not as a symbol of spring’s rebirth, but of ours, and as a sign of Christ’s tomb. A Polish legend says that Mary, in compassion for the soldiers at the cross, gave them eggs, but that her tears stained their shells with brilliant color. Legends have their origin in tales told around a hearth, but they often contain a profound truth. The idea of Mary, the first Christian, engaged in a merciful act of forgiveness and tenderness even in the shadow of the cross, describes the age-old wish that Christ “Easter in us.” —James Field, Copyright © J. YEAR OF FAITH: MARCH 2013 Lent to Triduum: Journey of Conversion Meditation The Year of Faith is a summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord Jesus, the world’s only Savior. In the mystery of Jesus’ death and resurrection, God has revealed, in its fullness, the love that saves and calls us to conversion of life through forgiveness of our sins (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 6). March, in this Year of Faith, leads us by Lent’s journey of conversion to the Paschal Triduum: Holy Thursday’s foot washing and Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Good Friday’s celebration of Jesus’ life-giving passion, the Vigil and Easter morning’s joy at Jesus’ glorious resurrection. In some parishes, especially those with catechumens, the March Gospels challenge us to join the Samaritan woman and the man blind from birth in deepening our understanding of Jesus as more than a prophet, indeed the Savior of the world. In other parishes, the Gospels invite us to let the Lord “prune” us of sin that we may bear fruit while there is time; to return as prodigals to our Father’s house and ease the welcome home for fellow sinners; to embrace as our own the pardon Jesus so graciously offered the woman caught in adultery. These Gospels bid us open our hearts to God’s gentle but powerful grace slowly purifying and transforming our thoughts and relationships, our mentality and conduct. But if at Easter we find ourselves disappointed at the incompleteness of our transformation, Lent’s yearly recurrence reminds us: conversion, like the journey of faith, is indeed a journey that lasts a lifetime. Mission Seek forgiveness and reconciliation in the sacrament of penance and offer forgiveness and reconciliation to those with whom I am not at peace.
