World History Timeline
Group Project

Objective: Create a timeline of the events of world history using your textbook, a ruler and colored writing
utensils. Bring in pictures from home (computer or magazine) to complete the timeline
Directions:
1.) Use your textbook to identify the major ancient civilizations (use the Table of Contents) and find
important events/dates within each civilization worth putting on the timeline (2-3 per civilization)
Early Man – Discovery of Fire and the Discovery of Agriculture (farming)
Mesopotamia (Sumer, Babylon, Assyria, Jews)
Egypt (Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, New Kingdom, Ptolemys)
India (Indus Valley people, Aryans)
China (Qin and Han)
Greece (Classical Greece, Hellenistic Age)
Rome (founding of the city – Republic – Empire)
Byzantines (Constantine – collapse)
Islamic Civilization (622 – 1100)
Maya
Inca
Aztecs
Once you have all of your research come get a blue timeline: ATTACH your notes to this paper to turn in
Making a Timeline
Step 1: Draw a timeline on your paper by making every thousand years 12 inches going back in time from
2010. Make sure you put your Zero in the right place
Step 2: Once you go back as far as 4,000BC STOP and draw
b/c you the next time back is
10,000 BC then go 12 more inches and do the same symbol then 100,000BC. Then another 12 inches and at
the end of your timeline put 500,000BC. This should be the end of your time line
Your timeline should go from 500,000 BC – 2010 AD with 2 Squiggly time separators
Now that you’ve drawn your timeline you need to put the ancient civilizations on it.
2.) Put them on the timeline in the correct order
a. Name, dates, location

Find 2-3 pictures of events/people/technology/structures etc. that exemplify some time period on
your Timeline
