PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE)
Safety glasses or face shield must be worn at all
times in work areas and specifically when
operating a abrasive wheel grinder.
Appropriate footwear must be worn when
preforming work with abrasive wheel grinders.
Shoe must be fully enclosed. No open toed
shoes allowed.
Rings and jewelry (long necklaces / bracelets,
etc.) must not be worn. Lighters, matches and
cell phones are not allowed in the shop area
when the shop is operational. Wearing gloves is
not allowed when using an abrasive wheel
grinder.
Other PPE Considerations
Long and loose hair must be tied back.
Close fitting/protective clothing must be worn.
Remove strings hanging from pullovers/sweaters.
Hearing protection must be worn as per shop
location protocols and when using this machine
constantly for an extended period of time. Hearing
protection is always recommended when using
abrasive wheel grinding equipment.
Dust masks may be required depending on material being worked on and potential worker
sensitivities.

SAFE WORK PROCEDURE
DO NOT use this machine or perform this process unless a supervisor / teacher instructed you in safe
procedures / operation and have given you authorization to perform associated tasks.
Always use tools and equipment for their intended purposes only.
Always take out of service and report damaged equipment to your supervisor / teacher without delay.
Pre-Job Safety:
1)
2)
3)
4)
Inspect workspace, Inspect grinder and electrical cord, check for frays or cracks in cord, and damage to plug end.
Inspect grinder, ensure grinder is guarded properly. Inspect grinding wheel looking for cracks or chips in wheel. If any
damage is found do not use grinder notify instructor.
Inspect workspace and walkways to workspace ensure there are no slip/trip hazards present. Clean area and clear away
any debris before starting to grinder. Ensure that flammable materials/solvents are not in area around pedestal
grinder.
Refer to MSDS for material being ground because an approved cartridge air respirator may be required.
Use local exhaust ventilation and or recommended respirator when grinding work-piece/material

Select, inspect and test grinding wheel; Visually inspect and conduct "ring test" before installing new grinding wheel.
Examine the grinding wheel for cracks or chips and discard faulty wheel. Never mount a wheel without the blotter on
each side.
Ensure grinding wheel RPM rating is compatible with pedestal grinder before installation.
Install or replace grinding wheel; Use correct tool/s and ensure that pedestal grinder is disconnected from power source
and the stop button has been pushed. Use correct/approved shaft spacers/bushing.
Do not over tighten mounting nut, as all abrasive wheels are fragile so handle grinding wheel with care.
Dress grinding wheel; Use correct dressing tool for specific grinding wheel. Bring dressing tool into contact with the
grinding wheel slowly and smoothly. Apply gradual pressure and move the dressing tool back and forth across the face
of the wheel. Dressing tool should not be in contact with grinding wheel during pedestal grinder start up. Stand to one
side of pedestal grinder until operating speed is reached. Use work rest to support dressing tool and do not apply
excessive pressure against grinding wheel.
Adjust tool rest; Work rest spacing should be calibrated to less than 1/8th (0.125 inches) from face of grinding wheel
and slightly below its center. Use correct tool for adjusting work rest. Do not adjust work rest during pedestal grinder
operation or with power on.
Ensure safety guard is in place and aligned properly, if the guard is not aligned properly, do no use grinder notify
instructor.
Transport work piece/material to pedestal grinder. Remember lifting techniques, get assistance from co-worker/s for
large, awkward or heavy materials to be lifted or carried.
Don all required personal protective equipment.
Operate / Perform Process:
14) Check the surface of the grinding wheel and flanges to ensure that no particles are present. Stand at a safe distance
and not directly in front of pedestal grinder when machine is starting up.
15) Plug pedestal grinder into power source and push the on button, Work piece should not be in contact with grinding
wheel during pedestal grinder startup. Allow grinder to come up to full speed before applying work piece/material.
16) Grinder should be secure and steady before starting to grind work piece.
17) Ease work-piece into grinding wheel surface. Do not exert excessive pressure on work-piece into grinding wheel. Grind
work-piece on "edge face" of grinding wheel and not on the "side face". Only grind material/work-piece that is specific

for the selected grinding wheel. Move the work-piece back and forth across the face of the wheel.
Keep hands and fingers at a safe distance from grinding wheel surface.
Do not leave pedestal grinder running unattended. Push machine stop button after each use.
Quench "hot end" of material in coolant tray and avoid handling work-piece by machined end.
Push machine stop button and wait for grinding wheel to stop, before removing debris. Use a stick or brush to remove
debris.
Post Job Procedure:
22) Clean up any debris with a broom and dust pan.
23) Clean off saw and put back in storage area. If saw or saw or blade is damaged, give to the instructor to lock out.
24) Report any hazardous situations to your supervisor / instructor immediately.
Lockout:
1)
2)
3)
Unplug grinder from power source.
Apply lockout device to plug end of grinder
Apply lock and tag to the plug end lockout device as per established lockout procedure.
