WRITING ESSAYS:
1. Read the question carefully.
2. UNDERLINE at least three key words or phrases in the question. For example, in a math question that says
“What percentage of people…” you would underline PERCENTAGE because it is what the question is asking for.
3. Think through your answer. Brainstorm what you would say if you were asked to answer the question aloud in
class.
4. BEGIN WRITING (each paragraph is 5-8 sentences)
INTRODUCTION
1. Come up with a HOOK sentence to start your paper. This is a sentence that is

meant to grab the reader’s attention and make them WANT to read it. It may be a
funny story, interesting statistic, or quote.
2. Fluff… tie your Hook sentence into your thesis… (remember how we did this with
the Patriot’s Pen essay)
3. Thesis Statement- Restate the question and summarize your paper… (example,
“Americans should be allowed to vote at age 16 because (reason 1), (reason 2),
and (reason 3).”
BODY
Answer the question. Provide support and details. Use what you have learned this
(2-4 PARAGRAPHS)
year and answer it in as much detail as possible. Imagine that the person reading it
knows NOTHING about the subject and you are their only source of information.
CONCLUCION
Restate the question and your thesis. Summarize what you have said so far. Wrap up
(1 PARAGRAPH)
your essay and make a lasting impact with your final words.
