CHICAGO – Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and pianist Angela Hewitt
perform at Mandel Hall on Sunday, January 11th at 3:00 PM. Together, they will offer an
intimate afternoon of German and French songs and solo piano works.
One of the world’s most beloved mezzo-sopranos, Anne Sofie von Otter has a particular
love of the French language. Her exceptional sensitivity and intelligence will figure
prominently in songs by five French composers: Hahn, Fauré, Chabrier, Debussy, and
Chaminade. Von Otter will also perform works by Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms.
In addition to accompanying von Otter in this performance, Angela Hewitt will be
performing works for piano by Schubert, Brahms, and Chabrier. She is renowned worldwide
for her solo performances, performing recitals in the most acclaimed concerts halls and
concertos with the world’s great orchestras.
There will be a pre-concert talk with Angela Hewitt and Berthold Hoeckner, UChicago
Associate Professor of Music and the Humanities, at 2:00 PM.

ABOUT ANNE SOFIE VON OTTER
Grammy award winning mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter is one of today's most
recorded artists with an unrivalled discography built across a career spanning more than
three decades at the very top of the profession. This season she tours across Europe with
her latest release, Douce France, recently Grammy nominated for 2015 Best Classical Solo
Vocal Album. Considered the superlative Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier) of her generation,
Anne Sofie von Otter has appeared in the role at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden,
Bayerische Staatsoper, Opéra national de Paris and The Metropolitan Opera.
A busy concert schedule takes von Otter to all corners of the globe and she has recently
appeared with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Sir Simon Rattle, Royal Concertgebouw
Orchestra with David Robertson, New York Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert, Boston
Symphony Orchestra under Daniele Gatti and Washington's National Symphony Orchestra
under Christoph Eschenbach. For the recent Wagner bicentenary she performed Wesendonck
Lieder with Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse under Marc Minkowski and with the
hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt under Paavo Järvi, and she appeared with Jonas Kaufmann
and the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by the late Claudio Abbado for a televised
performance of Das Lied von der Erde on the centenary of Mahler’s death.
ABOUT ANGELA HEWITT
One of the world’s leading pianists, Angela Hewitt regularly appears in recital and with major
orchestras throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia. Her performances and recordings of
Bach have drawn particular praise, marking her out as one of the composer's foremost
interpreters of our time.
Angela Hewitt has recently performed with orchestras including The Cleveland, Toronto
Symphony, Philharmonia, and Oslo Philharmonic orchestras and the Orpheus Chamber
Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. She has also appeared with Kammerorchester Basel, Camerata
Salzburg, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic and City of Birmingham Symphony orchestras, as
well as the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. Recent and future highlights include
concerts with the Finnish Radio Symphony and London Philharmonic orchestras, BBC
National Orchestra of Wales, Brussels Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, RAI Torino,
Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms and a
return to Verbier Festival.
Angela Hewitt's award-winning recordings for Hyperion have garnered praise from around
the world. Her ten-year project to record all the major keyboard works of Bach has been
described as “one of the record glories of our age” (The Sunday Times) and has won her a
huge following. She has been hailed as “the pre-eminent Bach pianist of our time” (The
Guardian) and “the pianist who will define Bach performance on the piano for years to
come” (Stereophile).
Angela Hewitt was named ‘Artist of the Year’ at the 2006 Gramophone Awards. She was
made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000 and was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s
Birthday Honours in 2006. She lives in London but also has homes in Ottawa and in Italy.
