Dear Parents/Guardians
Your son/daughter has been selected to attend a workshop run by an outside agency
‘Elevate Education’ on Thursday 28th January 2016 if your child is in cohort 1
(Catherine-Margaret) and Tuesday 15th December 2015 if your child is in cohort 2
(Martin-Vincent de Paul) at 2pm-3:15pm. This day will be hosted by ‘Elevate
Education’; students will have a 65 minute seminar on the different study techniques
with the key focus on ‘Memory and Mnemonics’. With the arrival of exams knowing
the material is no longer enough. It now becomes a case of application. In this seminar
students will be taught simple to use techniques and strategies that help students with
their memorisation and recall of information. A variety of memory techniques are
outlined to suit different learning styles:
-
Revision
- Triggers
Recital
- Chunking
How structure can assist with memory
- Rote Learning
- Mnemonics
The second workshop how to ‘Ace Your Exams’ will be run over two sessions
depending on your son/daughter’s cohort; cohort 1 (St. Catherine- St. Margaret) will
be on Thursday 14th April and cohort 2 (St. Martin- St. Vincent de Paul) will be on
Tuesday 12th April from 2pm- 3:30pm on both days. The question for many students
is: “How do I take all the work I have done and turn it into the marks I deserve?” This
seminar outlines the critical exam skills that will allow them to excel in the exam room,
whilst also demonstrating that exams are not just about the exam room - the
preparation is where the marks are. This workshop is run by Oxbridge graduates who
have achieved A* grades for GCSE’s and 1st in their respective degrees.
This is a unique and invaluable opportunity for students to gain experience and
guidance in revision and how to become independent learners. This will be of use to
them now and in years to come. As well as the Resource Kit, the following follow-up
resources are provided for each seminar as part of the programme, in order to create
genuine behavioural change:
•
•
•
•
Student implementation guides
12 months access to web-support
Exam, motivation & time management ‘presenter tip booklets’
Twitter support (including during holidays)
I know that students will find these workshop rewarding. Please complete the attached
consent form and return to me no later than Monday 14 December 2015. The below
form gives consent for one or both of the workshops; a reminder email will be sent to
all parents/carers prior to the second seminar.
Yours sincerely
Miss R Helyer
