Initially funded by Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt. Ltd., a leading Solid Waste Management company in INDIA, in its effort to create awareness of the dangers of the mismanagement of electronic waste (e-Waste). The organization is committed to environmentally benign recycling. Owing to the heterogeneous form of electronic scrap and the nature of its toxicity, the company designed its own technology for processing Electronic waste. By processing, we mean detoxifying the inherently present toxins in eWaste. The company Antony waste is a pioneer in Solid waste management and to its credit, it has been awarded the contract of the Kanjurmarg Landfill, the first of its kind and capacity in India and South East Asia. The company’s desire to complete its portfolio of waste management has prompted it to indulge in various categories of urban wastes like eWaste which as of today is not being managed efficiently. Mission Statement Continuous reduction of electronic-waste requiring landfill and ensuring safe disposal. Creation of jobs, capacity building and encouragement of small business ownership linked to a certain aspect of e-waste management and processing Systematic shift of e-waste processing activities from the informal to the formal sector Context and Competitive Analysis It has become very evident that the most complex part of Electronic waste is the treatment of the PVC cables, Plastic enclosures and the Printed circuit boards. Presently, in the unorganized sector (scrap yards and such) they are stripped, burnt, leached with strong acids for the purpose of recovering high yielding metals. They destroy the environment and cause irreversible damage to the surroundings and the personnel involved. In the organized sector, the scrap is shredded, pulverized and separated into metallic and non-metallic fractions to be sold to smelters who treat them as mineral ores. All the above processes have shortcomings in efficiency and pose serious problems to the environment. Firstly, shredding and pulverization are high-energy consuming processes and the inherent toxins are not neutralized before they are let off into waste streams thus adding expenditure to treat residual pollution. Even the best shredders have a huge carbon footprint. Most recyclers that employ these processes have to succumb to economy of scale to offset their working costs. Some of them fail to collect enough scrap so as to treat it in their own facility and hence just dissemble the scrap of it’s circuit boards and insulated copper cables, Size reduce by shredding and separate metallic fractions and export it to facilities whose recovery practices are questionable. We at Revive eWaste Pvt. Ltd. have devised a solution that promises to cut down energy consumption, neutralize toxins and avoid costs for residual pollution treatment. The carbon footprint of the process is also minimal. The technology has been designed keeping in mind the complexity and the heterogeneous nature of electronic waste and also adheres to the recommended best practices by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and Central Pollution control Board. We are authorized by the Pollution control board to handle electronic waste. We are also in talks with the internationally renowned ‘Ewaste foundation’,’ eWaste Stewardship’ and ’US EPA R2’ to become recycling partners to their clients. An environment impact analysis on our process is underway. IDBI – Carbon credit business is doing a carbon credit evaluation for a CDM approval to evaluate a carbon credit earning potential for our process. Services Offered Electronics ranging from Computers to mobile phones, Microwaves to DVD players, memory drives to Mp3 players are part and parcel of our everyday lives. Every household has at least 4 to 5 electronic devices and the obsolescence rates for each of these items have become pretty high. The volume of electronic scrap that is being generated is at the rate of 1000 tons per day by the city of Mumbai according to a report by Maharashtra pollution control board. (URL: http://mpcb.mah.nic.in). Most companies manufacturing these electronics or providing a service in conjunction with these electronic goods do not have a disposal policy in place and end up stockpiling them. They are Imran Zahid Dalvi Business Development Manager GSM: +91.8879300502 Page 2 Revive eWaste Pvt. Ltd. infact unaware of a method to dispose them.
