Half Day Conference
Good Inclusive Practice:
Professionals & ParentCarers Working Together
Thursday 12 June 2014, 9.00am– 1.00pm
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Sheffield
The Children and Families Act 2014 and the anticipated new SEN Code of Practice
emphasise the importance of schools and other services working in partnership with
parents and carers. This is positioned as critical to the enabling of high quality
educational provision for children and young people with special educational needs. This
conference will identify the structures that need to be in place to make working in
partnership an empowering reality rather than empty rhetoric. Presenters include parents
and carers, researchers and those working in schools. Together we will explore what
works in partnership, what does not and how we can improve on current practice. This
conference will be useful for all those who want to improve the quality of educational
experience for pupils through developing more effective partnerships.

Working Together With Parents/Carers - Building Effective Working Relationships
This presentation will focus on the caring experience as a parent feels it. We will talk about the
reality of caring for a child with special educational needs and being multiple service users. The
focus will be on the additional stresses and strains on the family unit. We will argue that an
appreciation of this is a prerequisite to building positive working relationships and fostering
effective communication between professionals and parent/carers.

Dr Pippa Murray, Ibk Initiatives
Putting The Child’s Voice At The Centre Of The Relationship Between Parents &
Professionals
This presentation will focus on the importance of listening to and learning from our children in
order to help us overcome barriers and move beyond traditional ways of relating to each other.
Concentrating on the voice of your children can help us strip things back to basics in order to
find ourselves focussing on our collective purpose and common humanity.
