Native American Paragraph Target Curriculum: English/Writing, Social Studies, Science Target Grade: 2 - 2 SOLs: E/W 2.1 – 2.5 Time: varies Objective: Identify the Indians as the first Americans and compare the various ways of Indian life. Compare foods eaten by different Indian tribes. Identify various Indian shelters. Describe the clothing worn by Indians. Write, revise, edit, and print a paragraph. Include details and terms from the field trip to Izaak Walton Park using the following word bank: Gather, fish, hunt, forage, indigenous species, rainbow trout, seeds, pods, whitetail deer, red tailed hawk, cattails, and simple tools Materials: pencils, paper, colored pencils Procedure: Students should create a paragraph that indicates what they know about or have learned about Native Americans. Provide the word bank that gives examples of concepts and examples presented during the trip to Izaak Walton Park. Reinforce the idea that the first Americans did not possess agricultural skills or tools. What did the students observe within the natural environment that the fist Americans could have used for food. Ask students to tell you at least three things they know about Native Americans. Students should then add illustrations to their paragraph. Observations: Teacher evaluation of the final product.
