Say Cheeese for Texas Libraries: Snapshot Day 2013 FULL REPORT Texas Library Snapshot Day is an annual tradition. During this promotional event, libraries pick one day in October (the official snapshot day is billed as October 31 each year) to gather and submit information about library activities. It is a “snapshot” of a day in the life of your library. Library Snapshot Day provides a way for libraries of all types across a state to show what happens in a single day. As always, the range of programs is simply impressive. Thanks to all the libraries and people who participated. We hope everyone will take part in Library Snapshot Day 2014. Summaries Total participating libraries (includes academic, public, and school libraries): 429 Sample of services from participating libraries… Every day, librarians at academic institutions are collaborating on at least 20 support and collaborative class efforts with faculty. The average public library building sees about 225 kids every day for storytime and over 270 people attending programs. The average school library hosts over 230 students participating in non-class related activities such as book clubs and individual study, and almost 405 students receive instructional assistance from librarians. We look to the library for a place to bring our family. It's where we learn, socialize research, relax, and meet new people. It's a community necessity. 4. This is a great location that has everything I need. If not, they research it and have it brought here. 5. I love that Internet is available and the amount and/or variety of books offered. Very resourceful. I recommend people all the time to come if they need some books or any sort of information. I'm so excited! I've been wanting to read this book. 1. The kids loved the craft. 2. We got thanks for providing a place for the craft group to meet. "Thank you for making the library easier for us to use." - Student "I love the new library set-up. I will be in here all the time." - Student "This is such a warm and inviting place. It is so wonderful that our library is really centered around student needs." - Teacher 1. I think I like the library now. 2. I am thankful that I can come in and check-out books. (comment from parent) 3. All the Bluebonnet Books are checked out. I really appreciate how you have brought in a browsable collection for us. Thank you for loaning whiteboards! I teach in a classroom that doesn’t have one and really need it. What a fantastic event! 1. The library is busy 2. The students are enjoying the topic of discussion/lesson topic 3. Miss Lambert can you help me find (a book) Do you have a certain book? Where will I find this book? How do you spell? 10 Wow - look at all the pumpkins! The class and individual pumpkin patch photos are so cute! I love the pumpkin patch posing area and the masks! The students did such a wonderful, creative job on the pumpkins! The library looks great and the Storybook Pumpkins Contest is even better this yea Ms. Hayes, we love our books. We love to read. The library is fun! I heard about that AR Quiz, may I take one, said a 1st grader. They enjoyed the extended hours. I could read this whole library. I love reading. The library is a great place for me and my daughter to come and study. The staff is always helpful and willing to assist us. We enjoy our time. It's a great place to be. Everyone is helpful and friendly. New books are presented in the front of the library, which makes it easy for me. The library has a good variety and the clerks are always happy to help and do the best they can. The only problem is that I don't have enough time to read more. 15. Also we do have computers, but we don't have a system of counting how many people used the computers. I had to leave that blank. I could not get the database usage for the day, but we do offer those services. I am always pleased by the many positive compliments we receive about our staff on Snapshot Day: This is a great place for all ages to come, and the staff is great! I love and appreciate this place and these people more and more every day. It is wonderful that the library offers 21 differemt computer classes free of charge. The instructor is a wonderful teacher, extremely knowledgeable and very patient. They had fun having their picture taken and being interviewed. (1) I am very pleased with the students's perception and use of the library. I agree wholeheartedly that it needs to be updated! Furniture and look is from the 1960's. (2) This [special day] was a great idea. The students had an opportunity to do things out of the norm. (3) A wide variety of things may go on in the library on any particular day. Activities may range from circulation (always) to Future Problem Solving competition to faculty and departmental meetings. I also host book club meetings. (4) The students were excited to know how much information was circulated on that one day. They had no idea of what really happens on a day-to-day schedule in the library. (5) Participating librarians commented on how much fun the day was both for themselves and for the students. 17 We collect our stats monthly, add them to our website, and email them to interested community and school board members and school administration. This was also our Book Character Day when all the students 800 dressed as their favorite book character. Please define key words like "programs". Ambiguity makes data collection a more challenging task than it has to be. Great program to share what is happening in school libraries. Good way of promoting libraries with data! My passionate belief is that if students are comfortable in the library when they don't need to be here they will use it when they do. The habit of coming, even for social needs, puts them in the library when they need to use the resources or just get their school work done. Thank you! This Snapshot Activity was such a positive experience! We found it difficult to limit the number of comments and programs we collected in our stats. For example, the majority of the elementary libraries are responsible for the morning broadcasts to students. We had 11 parent/ volunteer visits, as well as 20 teacher visits throughout the day. It was also drop-off day for Coins for Coats, so we were collecting money for much of the day. This a a great way to showcase all the things we do in the library and remind patrons of the many resources we provide. Thank you for Snapshot and allowing us to share what is going on in our library with you. FBISD is wonderful as well as forward thinking to plan and support their schools with professional level staff in the library. I enjoy the smiles on the faces of all those that share time with me in the library. Librarians lead very busy lives! I enjoy being a librarian and love the range of activities we perform on any given day. Library services provide a vital role in the school community in forming and shaping students to be life-long learners and readers. Our theme for this year is "Learning for Life," and our push is to enable users to have 24/7 access. We are increasing awareness of our electronic resources to reach that goal. We are having great success with communicating through the social learning platform Edmodo. Staff comment: I was helping a lady print and she said, “I just wanted you to know that I love coming here. It’s such a beautiful building and everyone is so helpful. I’ve never been in without y’all being able to help me.” On this day I was conducting a book fair. The library was open all day along with sales in the library. The library was also open late for a parent event in which the book fair was open for all parents. this does not include people asking for supplies, taking books to teachers that request during the day We had a busy day, with three programs and a Friends of the Library costume contest (held outside of the library). It was a fun Halloween Library Snapshot Day! It was a lot of fun and ended up making the library experience more interactive for our students. Although the library snapshot day is a look into our world, it's doesn't include the day today efforts. Everyday is different in the library. Everyday is an adventure and a chance to expand the library knowledge of our young students. 18 School Libraries are the backbone of instruction and collaboration in the Public school arena. The openness and cooperation of Library staff in learning and technology education is essential to the goals and learning of the school as a whole. We stay busy from the moment we arrive on campus until the time (long after our contract hours are over) we leave. Along with all of our librarian tasks that we complete each day, we also laminate every Tuesday and Thursday, make IDs for all students when they need them, reset passwords for students (for the network, Gaggle, and Blackboard), and complete and send a daily newsletter to all Klein Forest staff members. Our Snapshot Day was fun as our students and staff enjoyed the Read for the Record activities and shared in helping set a world record for the number of readers on that day. 859 Metzler students heard the story of October 3, 2013. I loved taking part in Snapshot Day. I realized I really need to promote using the library computers for instruction and other such purposes other than only OPAC searches. I want to get other libraries in my district to take part in Snapshot Day so we can compare and share information. We have been remodeling. This was the first week for class visits and circulation. We typically also offer free one-on-one small business counseling on Wednesdays through a partnership with SCORE, but unfortunately their rep was out on jury duty. It was a great day, with a big turn out! 18. Any final comments you would like to make about Library Snapshot Day? How can we improve this process? (Optional) We are excited to do this again next year! I find it ridiculous that the survey does not include "check out books" in the list of "What did you do at the library today?" Dozens of people write this in the "Other" box, and they should not have to do that. Why should we seem to be embarrassed that we check out books!! The process is very easy which I appreciate! I think Library Snapshot Day is an excellent idea to interact with our patrons and get direct feedback from them. It is very important for the community to know just how essential libraries are to the educational, recreational and professional needs of the public. What a great promotional event for school libraries that usually fly under the radar in our district public relations efforts! It's great to advocate for libraries this way, to show how important--and essential for some--library programs and services are to students and teachers. Thank you for organizing this. It made us think about how and what we keep statistics on and asking for more input from students and not just staff and administration. Oct. 31st is not a good day for doing this. Schools have things going on at each individual campus that aren't normal. Is there any more direct way to upload photos? The last two years campus librarians used a Google form to report the data they collected. This made the District report easier to compile. This makes sharing the spreadsheet results with the librarians very easy. We will send you the form that Diane Hart created, and the resulting spreadsheet. It would be helpful if there were a different Google form for each type of library for those who use Google. Also, data for District-wide circulation and online database usage was calculated at the District level. 19 We totaled the "What did you do at the library today? Please check all that apply" responses, but you did not ask for the data! You all are doing a wonderful job. It would be nice if you could email us a final report instead of us having to hunt for it. The surveys were interesting to see, but I wish that you would let us imput more of the data from the surveys, since we're taking the time to collect it. Also, in the list of reasons for visiting the library (on the survey), there should be an option for checking out books or other materials. Almost all of the "Other"s were about checking out materials or picking up holds. Other than that, this was an interesting endeavor. It was fun planning this. Although we have 72 schools, the data I have submitted is for just 54 of them. The other schools didn't supply data to me in a timely manner. I hope that libray events will be shared wtih the public across Texas in order that library services provides are important in each community. Library Snapshot Day was great fun at our library. We created a "what if" board to encourage patrons to tell us what they'd like to change in our library. It's always fun to participate! It's amazing all the cool programs and resources we're offering at any given time! Like the idea! Great for publicity & promotion of the library. How can we send photos of our Library Snapshot Day to TLA? Would it be nice to do this during Book Week? I think snapshot day should be a compilation of what could happen on a typical day or not so typical day in a Texas library. Today, 31st, it is raining cats and dogs. Even if we had planned an extravaganza, the Please explain or offer examples to clarify questions on counts for library activities. Emphasize that libraries can specify a specific day in October. Local news agencies were under the impression that this day was 10/05 statewide. Thank you! Enjoyed it! Snapshot Day was fun for my school. I would have loved to have used a week. So many different activities are spread throughout the week to accommodate teacher's schedules. I don't feel like I adequately portrayed the different services of my library in just one day. This was a wonderful experience. Our patrons were very open to the idea of being photographed, or, in the very least, taking a survey. Thanks TLA! This is our first posting. Next year we will try to take pictures. I think that school database usage would be higher later in the year. I'd be interested in seeing the data from all the academic library respondents. I think a good question to add would be: How large a student population do you serve? We should send in some photos from our event to show on your webpage with participant's permission. I would like to be able to submit a file with pictures/ words 20
