July 2015
Dear Parents/Carers,
Once again we have had a fantastic summer
term. Our children have worked really hard and
we would like to share with you our
celebrations and achievements. Below we have
outlined some of the events that our children
have taken part in this term.
We say goodbye to Mr Burland, Miss Pace, Miss
Slammon, Miss Barker and Miss Cardamone and
wish them all the best in their future careers.
I wish everyone a fun and relaxing summer
holiday.
Ms S C Wallis
Sports Day
We had another successful sports day this year
and the weather didn't disappoint! The children
showed off their sporting skills in the running,
skipping, bean bag on the head, egg and spoon,
bean bag in the bucket, and a whole school
relay. Well done to all the children who tried
really hard, and we saw some great
sportsmanship. However after counting up and
verifying all of the points, we can announce
that... Mrs. Law's house Europe won!
The Winning Team!
Nursery Sports Day
Our very first Nursery sports day was also a
success and we had some fabulous mini athletes
taking part. The Year 6 children helped organise
and deliver it which made it very special event.
Children took part in the egg and spoon, bean
bag in the bucket, running and bean bag on the
head... Well done to all who took part!
We would also like to thank all parents, family
members and also members of the community
who came to cheer the children on!
Sports Cluster Event
The KS2 children had the fantastic pleasure of
attending a Cluster Sports event at Great
Ouseburn Cricket Club. During the day the
children competed in many events: Rounders,
Athletic Events, Goal Ball and VX. The children
had both fun and achieved high results in many
events showcasing both their individual talents
and impeccable team work. Well done boys and
girls, we look forward to taking you again next
year!
Snag Golf
This half term we have had a specialist golf
instructor in school working with classes 2, 3
and 4. The children have each had 4 sessions of
SNAG golf and have thoroughly enjoyed
them. The children had lots to say about the
sessions:
Y2 boy – “It’s amazing and lots of fun.”
Y5 boy – “Absolutely brilliant! It’s something
new in school and we have never done it
before.”
Y5 boy – “It’s great because it develops hand
eye co-ordination and golf skills.”
Y5 girl – “It develops team work. It’s very
challenging and some of the tasks are hard and
other easier.”
Tag rugby
Earlier this term, the KS2 children participated in
a tag rugby tournament at Boroughbridge High
School. The children had a wonderful time
playing against children from other local
schools. They showed great sportsmanship, skill
and energy and we are very proud of our
performance. Well done to all the children who
went!
Kwik Cricket
A mixed ability team of Year 5 and Year 6
children made Green Hammerton C of E school
very proud with their efforts and achievements
this year in Kwik Cricket. The children won in
their cluster Kwik Criket event at Boroughbridge
High School and went on to qualify to the
Hambleton Cluster event in Thirsk. The children
showed a valiant effort, demonstrating both
impeccable team work and sportsmanship
leading them to place 6th out of 68 schools.
Well done!
Class Visits to Tesco – Farm to Fork
Children in Class One have been looking at
where our food comes from this term and we
had a wonderful trip behind the scenes at Tesco
to finish it off. We got stuck into kneading
dough for the Bakery, and had a special tour
around the Bakery itself. We were shown the
ovens and freezers, which were very cold and
finished the trip with some food tasting... Yum!
Looking in the freezer!
Class 2 thoroughly enjoyed their trip behind the
scenes at Tesco. We visited the in store bakery,
the shop floor and the very chilly enormous
walk in freezer! We also sampled a tasty range
of bread, cheese, fruit and vegetables. We
welcomed some very special visitors to our class
to help us learn about life when our
grandparents were little. Several Grandparents
spent part of the afternoon with us and
answered lots of our questions. We discovered
that school was very different in the 'olden
days'.
As part of the ‘Farm to Fork’ scheme, Class 3 will
be going to Tesco on Thursday 16th July. They
will be learning about where different foods
come from and how they are grown and
made. The children (and staff) will also get the
chance to sample some food - yum, yum! We
are really looking forward to going on this trip
and hopefully the children will learn lots about
how their food is produced.
The children of Class 4 attended a 'Farm to Fork'
child led teaching activity at Clifton Moor Tesco.
The trip included a visit to the on-site bakery, a
treasure hunt in the fruit and vegetable aisle
and the eagerly anticipated (for the staff!) taste
testing. It was a fun filled day for both children
and staff to understand the process at which
our food goes through in order to get from
supermarket to our plates!
Tyre Area
We have had a fantastic new tyre activity area
added to the school field. The children are
having lots of fun climbing and balancing on the
different tyres.
their French phrases. The children had a
wonderful afternoon and sang brilliantly.
Class One having fun on the tyres!
KS2 Production
The children in Years 3-6 performed a fantastic
end of year production, 'Aladdin Trouble'. The
cast included a comedy dame, a panto baddy
and a doomed romance, topped off with
excellent singing and acting throughout. The
children's effort and dedication to the show
made the evening entertaining and enjoyable
for both the audience and extremely proud staff.
Class 4 Residential
In June, the Y5/6 pupils had a fantastic
residential visit to a Kingswood site in
Northumberland. The sun shone for three days
whilst the children took part in some amazing
activities. These included: orienteering, climbing
wall, zip wire, high equilibrium, outdoor laser,
camp fire and many more. The children showed
no fear and attempted all activities
with enthusiasm, determination and bravery.
The staff were so proud of each and every pupil.
What an enjoyable time away for all involved!
‘Aladdin Trouble’
Having fun at Kingswood!
Class 3 Singing Afternoon
On Thursday 9th July Class 3 took part in a
French singing afternoon at Boroughbridge
Primary School. We joined with other children
around the cluster to perform a number of
songs in French that the children had learnt
throughout the year as part of their French
lessons. We sang a couple of songs with all the
other schools from the cluster, and then each
school performed a song by themselves. After
all that singing, the children had juice and
biscuits which gave them a chance to practice
The Hive
What an amazing year The Hive has had. We
have been supported by you all more than ever
this year. We have had lots of great events but
the top ones have to have been the Beach Party
and the Race for Life.
The Beach Party was amazing, it was lovely
afternoon and great to see so many of you
there. I also have to say a big thank you to all
the Hive staff for filling over 40 water balloons!
Race for Life
Race for Life
Race for Life
As cheesy as it sounds I (Miss MacCormack) was
so proud of all the children that took part in
this. It was so hot and they just kept running
and running. The team spirit between them was
amazing. The way they helped each other out
to make sure everyone completed their run was
just fantastic. Finlay and Amye led the way and
then took charge of supporting all the little
ones. It was a wonderful afternoon for a
wonderful cause.
House Teams
As you will be aware we have a House Point
system in school where children work as a team
to earn as many house points as possible over
the year. Teams are made up of children from a
mixture of year groups and they are awarded
house points for any number of reasons
including exceptional behaviour and hard
work. At the end of the year, we count up the
total number of house points earned by each
team and as a celebration the winning team are
given a treat to reward them for their superb
efforts across the year. This year the winning
team were...
North America – Charlotte Hale, Honey Carlisle,
Daisy Cliff, Keira Blackburn, Wilfred Lee,
Dominic Scothern, Georgie Wood, Will Harvey,
Charlie Scarsbrook, Rebecca Atkinson,
William Holloway, Harvey Gawthrope, Marnie
Scatchard.
These children all enjoyed a DVD treat in
school and we would like to thank them once
again for their contribution to school life this
year. We are very proud of them and are lucky
to work with such exceptional children.
Captain Rummage
This year the Eco-Committee set up
a recycling station in school for old glasses,
stamps, foreign currency, print cartridges and
mobile phones. These items are then taken to
the Cone Exchange in Harrogate where Captain
Rummage tells us the monetary value of the
items to OXFAM. This then becomes a credit for
our school to use at the Cone Exchange against
recycled and unused materials from Betty's and
Taylors of Harrogate e.g. ribbon, card, boxes etc
that can be used in school for any number of
DT/Art projects. We would just like to inform
you that when we last checked we have a credit
of £191 which is amazing, so thank you for all of
your recycling so far and please continue to do
so over the Summer holidays and bring in all of
your 'treasure' in September!
Y6 Leavers
We are so sad to say goodbye to the fantastic
group of Y6 pupils that are leaving our school
this year.
Amye, Ben, Caleb, Charlene, Daisy, Jacob and
Henry, you have all been an absolute pleasure
to know and work alongside. You are a very
talented, enthusiastic and inspirational group of
young people who have a very bright and
exciting future ahead of you. We hope that you
are happy, hard-working and successful at your
next school and that you take with you lots of
fond memories of Green Hammerton Primary
School. Be happy, keep smiling and stay safe.
We shall miss you all very much.
Y6 pupils having fun!
