Post-Secondary Specialist
Reports to: Transition Manager
Status: Full-time, 40 hrs/wk
This position assists Operation Fresh Start (OFS) participants with transition into college and postsecondary (PSE) programming. The PSS provides outreach, case management, community development,
and academic advising to meet the needs of graduating OFS participants as they prepare for education
beyond OFS. This position will develop partnerships with college staff and other community
organizations to provide referrals and to support the success of OFS participants.
Responsibilities and Duties
1. Provide outreach, case management, and academic advising to meet the needs of OFS program
participants
a. Advises potential students, students who have applied for admission, and current
students, regarding programs of study, program qualifications, course content, course
selection, prerequisites, employability upon completion of courses or programs,
transferability, recommended credit load, advanced standing process, registration,
admissions, application, graduation, and campus resources
b. Evaluates applicant credentials, accepts and refers when appropriate
c. Advises students regarding transferability of courses to and from Madison College and
other campuses
d. Advise students regarding independent living needs in support of their education
e. Resolves questions or concerns on academic policy, procedure implementation and
interpretation as presented by participants
f. Monitors progress of participants in courses
g. Assists students in enrollment in courses
h. Responds to student concerns by advising or referring students to appropriate resources
2. Assist students in complying with administrative and program requirements
a. Assist students with scheduling, registration, adds/drops/ official withdrawal, etc.
b. Assist students in understanding and reviewing their degree audits
3. Assist students with identifying and connecting with academic support services such as:
a. Tutoring or learning center services
b. Counseling
c. Campus life involvement
d. Career and employment services
4. Administration
a. Use spreadsheets, databases, email, internet, word processing, and other data
management systems to report and coordinate post-secondary opportunities
b. Maintain and use data for continuous program improvement
c. Plan, organize, promote, and implement group events, workshops, campus tours, or
other relevant programs
5. Community outreach
a. Engage, establish and maintain relationships with community groups, professional
organizations, and advisory committees to identify and assess program needs and
opportunities

Knowledge of higher education environments, both two-year and four-year
a. Knowledge of typical college offerings, specifically career oriented certificate
training, including requirements for admission and completion
b. Knowledge of administrative process and procedures
Knowledge of teaching and instructional methodologies
Demonstrated commitment to assisting students in their academic success
Ability to establish and maintain fruitful and cooperative working relationships with
individuals at all levels in the organization, students, and the public
Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
Skill in spoken and written communication
Demonstrated skill in communication and relations with people from diverse socioeconomic and racial backgrounds
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree preferred
Two years’ work experience in an educational setting related to career development
and academic advising preferred.
