Purpose: 1.1 To outline for all staff the procedure for dealing with scrap copper 1.2 Metal is one of the most recyclable products. Most metals only have to be melted down and then reformed into other products, making its life cycle potentially endless. Recycling makes a substantial saving on landfill space requirements and it helps conserve the world’s resources. 2 Procedure: 2.1 The copper should be pure copper in wire, tube, pipe, sheet, or granular form. Copper compounds are not acceptable. If in doubt contact Trevor Sewell in ASEP 5580 2.2 If required the copper to be scrapped must be cleaned until it is free from contamination. 2.3 The appropriate health and safety procedures must be followed when decontaminating the scrap material. If in doubt please consult the School Safety Officer – Jackie O’Connor 4673 . 2.4 The cleaned Copper should be taken to ASEP for recycling 2.5 Complete the appropriate scrap log book – available in the stores 2.6 ASEP staff will take the scrap and deposit in the appropriate bin held securely with the . ASEP area . When enough scrap has been collected – estates will be contacted and an appropriate licenced contractor appointed to collect the material for recycling. .
