“Practice Writing” Assignments -- #1 through #10:
o #1 Write a sentence of at least fifteen words in length
that has at least four nouns. Make at least one of
them a proper noun. Be sure to highlight the nouns in
some way—by circling them or drawing a box around
them. Also indicate which are proper nouns. (Make
the sentence about a vacation.)
o #2 Write a sentence of at least fifteen words in length
that has at least four nouns. Make at least two of
them plural nouns. Be sure to highlight the nouns in
some way—by circling them or drawing a box around
them. (Make the sentence about a hurricane.)
o #3 Write a sentence of at least fifteen words in length
that has at least four nouns. Make at least one of
them abstract. Label the nouns as either “concrete” or
“abstract.” (Make the sentence about a ballet or
opera.)
o #4 Write a sentence of at least fifteen words in length
that has at least four nouns. Make at least one of
them a non-countable noun. Circle all the nouns and
label them as either countable or non-countable.
(Make the sentence about a trip to the grocery store.)
o #5 Write two medium-length sentences using at least
one collective noun. In one sentence make the
collective noun singular; in the other sentence, make
the collective noun plural. (Please note: use the same
collective noun for both sentences. For example, both
sentences could use the word “band:” Singular use
 The marching band won its competition. Plural
use All the band played their instruments well. )
o #6 Write a sentence of at least fifteen words in length
that has at least four nouns. Circle the nouns and
provide as much information about each one as
possible (Common or proper? Singular or plural?
Collective? Countable or non-countable? Abstract or
concrete? (Make the sentence about a garage sale.)
o #7 Write a sentence of at least fifteen words in length
that has at least four nouns. Make at least one of
them appear as the object of a preposition and have a
different noun serve as the subject of the sentence.
Be sure to highlight the nouns/functions in some way.
(Make the sentence about keys.)
o #8 Write a sentence of at least fifteen words in length
that has at least four nouns. Identify the nouns and
indicate how it functions (subject, direct object, indirect
object, object of the preposition, appositive, et cetera).
(Make the sentence about Hawaii.)
o #9 Write a sentence of at least fifteen words in length
that has at least two gerunds. Circle all your other
nouns and underline any suffixes within your words
that distinguish them as nouns. (Make the sentence
about Dallas)
