Terms of Reference
Accountable for (decisions/actions by the Committee):

Approving constitutions of Ethics Committee in Faculties, HYMS and Support
Services

Designating Faculty, HYMS and Support Services Ethics Committees as
being responsible institutionally

Developing best practice and acting as the lead committee for certain types of
activity.
Responsible for (actions of behalf of the Committee):

Advising Senate and Council on ethical issues

Developing, reviewing and monitoring the implementation of the University’s
Ethics Policy and for sustaining a University-wide awareness of ethical issues

Developing policy and guidelines with and for the Faculties, HYMS and
services areas in relation to ethical and related issues

Overseeing Faculty, HYMS and Support Services Ethics committees

Promoting and awareness raising awareness of ethical issues and fostering
debate

Ensuring training in ethical matters and overseeing its implementation

Advising Faculty, HYMS and Support Services Ethics Committees regarding
procedures, or where a particular issue is unresolved, including where
concerns are raised by participants in a particular study, and where necessary
to adjudicate brining such matters to the attention of University Senate and
Council

Reporting to Senate and Council by way of an annual summary at the end of
each academic year
Consulted on:

Issues raised by Faculty, HYMS and Support Services Ethics Committees

Relevant aspects of the University Strategic Plan

All institutional ethical issues as deemed by Senate and Council
Informed on:

All institutional ethical issues as deemed by Senate and Council

Annual reports received from each Faculty, HYMS and Support Services
Ethics Committees and report or make recommendations thereon to Senate
and Council. (to be confirmed)
Mode of Operation



The University Ethics Committee will support equality of opportunity and good
relations between staff and students whatever their race, gender, disability,
sexual orientation, religion and belief, age or socio-economic background.
This support will include participating in university activities, such as equalities
monitoring, impact assessment and other measures as appropriate, in line
with the University’s legal obligations.
The Committee normally meets at least three times per academic year. One
meeting per year will be with Chairs of Faculty and Support Services Ethics
Committees to receive their annual reports. The Director of Health and Safety
will be invited to this meeting.
The Committee may, if it considers it necessary or desirable, co-opt members
with particular expertise or seek external advice.
