Public Lecture Series on Data Mining and Grid Computing: Fundamentals, current issues and future challenges By A/Prof Xue Li School of ITEE The University of Queensland, Australia Data Mining - Part A : Thursday 15 December 2011, 13.00 – 15.00 Data Mining - Part B: Friday, 16 December 2011, 13.30 – 15.30 Grid Computing - Part A: Monday, 19 December 2011, 13.00 – 15.00 Grid Computing - Part B: Tuesday, 20 December 2011, 13.00 – 15.00 Venue: ruang Rapat Besar, Gedung A, Fasilkom UI, Depok Data Mining By A/Prof Xue Li The University of Queensland, Australia Abstract The knowledge of data mining involves three aspects: data, algorithm, and application domain. Data is the first-class citizen in data mining research. Understanding data is always critical: their structures, high dimensionality, and their qualification and quantification issues. The second important aspect of data mining is about algorithms: their effectiveness, efficiency, scalability, and their applicability in discovering different patterns of associations, correlations, clustering, sequential patterns, and classifications. Amongst a variety of applicable algorithms, to select a right one for dealing with a specific problem is always a challenging question that requires data mining research community contributions. The third important aspect is on domain knowledge of applications. Without a good understanding of domain knowledge, data mining process is hardly able to avoid GIGO (Garbage In and Garbage Out) effect. This public lecture is to introduce the fundamentals of data mining techniques, the current progress, and future challenges in data mining researches. Grid Computing By A/Prof Xue Li The University of Queensland, Australia Abstract Grid computing including the computational grids and data grids provides an infrastructure for the resource sharing, coordinated and interactive problem solving across multiinstitutional domains in a secure context. Examples can be found in large and collaborative researches in science and technology:a biologist can exploit thousands of computers to analyze DNA and Gene Mapping; Space craft engineers can work together in a shared cyber space to mount a large collaboration in design, simulation, and instrumentation of a space project. This public lecture is to introduce the basic concepts of grid computing, its examples, the research and development issues, and its current challenges in the integration with the cloud computing. About Dr. Xue Li Dr Xue Li is an Associate Professor in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane Australia.
