Shelter Monitor Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments – Fremont, CA Shelter Monitor (Fremont) Safe Alternatives Violent Environments (aka SAVE) has a rewarding opportunity for a qualified Shelter Monitor under the leadership of SAVE’s Shelter Coordinator. MISSION: SAVE’s mission is to strengthen every individual and family we serve with the knowledge and opportunity to break the cycle of violence and build healthier lives. POSITION: Shelter Monitor Status: Part-time, Nonexempt Location: Fremont, CA Hours: 24.0 per week (530p – 12a Sun / 1130p - 6a Mon, Tue, & Wed) Salary: DOE; partial comprehensive benefits Essential Duties*: • Provide advocacy, crisis intervention and information and referral services for shelter clients. • Perform duties which help maintain the smooth operation of the shelter facility including cleaning and maintenance of food storage area, house laundry, inventory and distribution of donations. • Perform shelter intakes and exits as needed. • Orient new residents to shelter facilities. • Respond to crisis calls on SAVE’s 24 hour crisis line in a caring, informative and nonjudgmental fashion. Provide crisis intervention, advocacy, and information referral services to hot-line callers. • When single-shifted, assumes responsibility for safety and security of the shelter. • Assist shelter program staff in maintaining client and programmatic files. • Coordinates with other shelter staff to ensure continuity of services to address residents’ needs. • Communicates important incidents involving residents to the appropriate shelter staff. • Helps to provide food to shelter residents by maintaining menu production records, purchasing food, preparing food, transporting food, and documenting meal counts. • Provide age-appropriate activity groups for shelter children as needed. General Duties: (shared by all direct service staff) • Responds to crisis calls in a caring, informative, and non-judgmental fashion. • Maintains up-to-date files and records of Hotline calls. • On a rotating basis, serves as on-call Backup for Hotline. • Assumes responsibility for call-forwarding the Hotline as needed. • Provides emergency client transportation. • Attends all required meetings, including staff meetings, training’s, consultations, and retreats. • Assists with training new staff members and volunteers. • Assumes responsibility for site security and safety. • Provides input into program planning and developments. • Assists with maintaining program operations and office functions as needed. Non-Essential Duties* • Other duties: As needed, including but not limited to as deemed by Supervisor: QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience Ability to perform the duties described above. A typical means of acquiring those abilities would be: Two years’ experience providing similar services in a residential or crisis services setting. REQUIREMENTS: • Work in, or knowledge of, the domestic violence field • Computer literate with knowledge of MS Office, Publisher and donor databases • Must possess a valid California driver's license, insurance, and access to an automobile. Proof of insurance and loss payee endorsement is required. Must meet agency's driving requirements. • Must be a certified domestic violence counselor or undergo the state-mandated 40hour training to become certified. • Ability to adapt to a variety of environments or work demands. • Ability to maintain a high level of consciousness and sensitivity to client needs and domestic violence issues. • Ability to communicate effectively. • Ability to work independently. • Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends. • Willingness to adjust schedule on a weekly basis if needed, as directed by the Director of Programs. • Ability to work in a crisis-oriented environment. • Be committed to the mission and values of SAVE.
