Wyoming School Psychology Association October 22nd & 23rd 2015 Casper, Wyoming “Recent Advances in Understanding Reading Difficulties: Assessment, Prevention, and Remediation” with David A. Kilpatrick, PhD David A. Kilpatrick, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Psychology for the State University of New York, College at Cortland and a New York State Certified School Psychologist with the East Syracuse-Minoa Central School District. He received his PhD in psychology from Syracuse University in 1994. David has been a practicing school psychologist for 27 years (18 full-time, 11 part-time) and has been teaching courses in learning disabilities and educational psychology for 20 years (11 part-time, 9 full-time). A long time member of the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading, he also conducts research on reading acquisition and reading difficulties/disabilities. As a practitioner, David has conducted over 1,000 evaluations on students with reading difficulties. He is the author of the recently published Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties (Wiley, 2015) and Equipped for Reading Success-Third Edition (Casey & Kirsch, 2015). What: This two-day workshop will review the research on understanding, assessing, preventing, and remediating reading difficulties. Over 97% of the empirical reading research is published in journals outside of the school psychology field. The goal is to provide the most useful insights from this vast body of research on reading acquisition and reading difficulties. Prevention: Research has shown very clearly that most reading difficulties can be prevented via Tier 1 instructional changes in kindergarten and first grade, yet there is little evidence that schools are adequately implementing these findings and therefore widespread reading problems persist. The research on best prevention practices will be presented. Assessment: David has developed an approach called Intervention Oriented Assessment, which he has been using since 2001. Participants will learn how to evaluate students with reading difficulties and determine precisely why a given student is struggling in reading. Intervention: There are empirical studies showing that we can “normalize” the skills of most students with reading disabilities (i.e., > 34th percentile), even students with the most severe reading disabilities, and these results are maintained over time. For those whose reading skills cannot be normalized, research shows they can still make much stronger gains than teachers have been seeing. Many workshops present theory and research and leave little time for the practical and applied material, which is often rushed through toward the end. David’s presentation does the reverse. The practical and applied material is covered thoroughly from the beginning, with the research justification mixed in along the way. The theoretical underpinnings are explored more fully toward the end. WHERE: Ramada Plaza Riverside Room rates are $79.00. Please reserve rooms by October 8th, 2015 to ensure this rate.
