Most Common Form Poems
Limerick-a short, humorous poem that usually tells a story and is written in ABBA rhyme.
*Haiku-a three line poem usually about nature that has 5-7-5 syllable pattern.
Tanka- a Japanese poem consisting of five lines, the first and third of which have five syllables and the other seven, making 31 syllables in all and giving a complete picture of an event or mood.
Acrostic- An acrostic is a poem or other form of writing in which the first letter, syllable or word of each line spells out a word or a message.
Concrete- a poem whose meaning is conveyed through its graphic shape or pattern on the printed page
Cinquain- a short poem consisting of five, usually unrhymed lines containing, respectively, two, four, six, eight, and two syllables
*Sonnet- a poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line.
Ode- An ode is a kind of poem, usually praising something.
