Discovering Jesus
(Scripture)
Luke 22:66-71 - Jesus Before the Sanhedrin
When day came the council of elders of the people met, both chief priests and scribes,
and they brought him before their Sanhedrin. They said, “If you are the Messiah, tell
us,” but he replied to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I question, you will
not respond. But from this time on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of
the power of God.” They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied to them,
“You say that I am.” Then they said, “What further need have we for testimony? We
have heard it from his own mouth.”

The Rest of the Story
(Teaching/Catechist)
ⴕ Jesus made it clear that he was the long awaited Messiah spoken of thought out
the Old Testament.
ⴕ Luke recounts one daytime trial of Jesus (Lk 22:66–71) and hints at some type of
preliminary nighttime investigation (Lk 22:54–65). Mark (and Matthew who follows
Mark) has transferred incidents of this day into the nighttime interrogation with the
result that there appear to be two Sanhedrin trials of Jesus in Mark (and Matthew);
see note on Mk 14:53.
ⴕ Sanhedrin: the word is a Hebraized form of a Greek word meaning a “council,” and
refers to the elders, chief priests, and scribes who met under the high priest’s
leadership to decide religious and legal questions that did not pertain to Rome’s
interests. Jewish sources are not clear on the competence of the Sanhedrin to
sentence and to execute during this period.

Closing Prayer
(Prayer)
Evening Prayer to the Son of God
By St. Antiochus
Only-Begotten Word of the Father, Jesus Christ, who alone is perfect:
According to the greatness of your mercy, do not abandon me, your servant,
but ever rest in my heart.
O Sweet Jesus, Good Shepherd of Your flock,
deliver me from the attacks of The Enemy.
Do not allow me to become the prey of Satan's evil intent,
even though I have within me the seed of eternal damnation.
Instead, O Lord Jesus Christ, Adorable God, Holy King,
while I sleep, protect me by Your Holy spirit,
through Whom You sanctified Your Apostles.
Enlighten my mind by the light of the Holy Gospel,
my soul by the love of Your Cross,
my heart by the purity of Your teaching.
Protect my body by Your sacred passion, my senses by Your humility,
and awaken me in due time for Your glorification.
For You, above all, are adorable,
together with Your eternal Father, and the Holy Spirit,
now and ever, and forever.
Amen.
