Project: La casa miniatura
Objective: Students will describe a house and objects within a house using appropriate room, furniture
and preposition vocabulary .
Project description: Students will work alone or in groups of 2-3, no more, to build a model of a house
and furniture using simple, cheap materials (posterboard, cardboard, shoeboxes, etc). Students will
label the rooms and parts of the house. Students will also fill each room with appropriate furniture and
label the furniture. This project will be completed entirely out of class.
Alternatives students have done in the past:
-an MTV Cribs style video in which people describe their rooms and furniture (if in a group, all members
should talk).
-a Little Big Planet level or Minecraft walk-through with labeled furniture and a voiceover.
-A walk-through of a house on a computer program
Notes about the project: Focus on the objective. The house should be neat and ideally nice to look at,
but if what you’re doing doesn’t add to the objective, it isn’t the best use of your time. Model houses
should be fairly small (think ‘’stacked shoe boxes’’, not ‘’Barbie mansion’’). Furniture in the past has
been drawn, cut from magazines, modeled from clay
Requirements: Must have at least 6 different rooms, including kitchen, bathroom, living room and at
least one bedroom. The other two (+) rooms are your decision. Each room must contain at least 4
pieces of unique furniture (i.e. once you have a sink in the bathroom, you can put a sink in the kitchen
but it won’t count towards your 4 items in a room again). Optional: Label other parts of the house
besides the furniture (door, backyard, roof, etc) with extra words you find on your own.
Due dates:
‘’Draft’’ due: A sketch would be appropriate for the model house. A rough draft dialogue would be
appropriate for a video. Monday, August 19th
FINAL PROJECTS DUE: Monday, August 26th
