Identify the UCS, UCR, CS and CR in the following examples (answers follow):
1) To treat alcoholics, we sometimes put a chemical in their drinks that makes them nauseous.
Eventually the taste of alcohol makes them nauseous.
2) When Heather was in college she was robbed by a young man who threatened her with a knife.
It was an unexpected and frightening experience. This event occurred just about dusk and for a
long time thereafter, she often experienced moments of dread in the late afternoons.
3) It is springtime and the pollen from the flowers causes you to sneeze. Soon you are sneezing
every time you see a flower.
4) People receiving chemotherapy often vomit during or shortly after the procedure. After several
chemotherapy sessions, people begin feeling sick at the sight of the treatment room
5) Alexander is four years old. One night his parents decided to light a fire in the family room
fireplace. A burning ember jumped out of the fireplace and landed on Alexander’s leg, creating a
nasty burn. He cried because the burn hurt. A week later, when Alexander’s parents started to
light another fire in the fireplace, Alexander began to cry.
6) Every time someone flushes a toilet in the apartment building, the shower becomes very hot and
causes the person to jump back. Over time, the person begins to jump back automatically after
hearing the flush, before the water temperature changes.
7) When pairing a red light with a female pigeon, a male pigeon becomes sexually aroused.
Eventually, the red light alone will cause the arousal.
8) Rats can be trained to move from one place to another by a sound signal. In some labs, the wire
floor of a rat’s cage can be rigged to conduct an electric shock result in a rat jumping to another
“safe” location in the cage. By pairing a buzzer sound with the electric shock, rats can be taught
to move to another location in the cage by the sound of the buzzer alone.
9) A dog playing fetch picks up a tennis ball that has unfortunately landed on a wasps’ nest and he
is stung several times. From then on, the dog refused to play with tennis balls or any ball of a
similar size or color. Identify the UCR, UCS, etc etc and also identify what led the dog to avoid
any similar balls.
