2013-2014 CETL FACULTY AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES CO-TEACHING Description, Schedule and Application Form Facilitator(s): Dr. Nancy Bacharach, Teacher Development, School of Education, Teresa Washut Heck, Kinesiology, School of Health and Human Services. Nancy and Teresa are CoDirectors of the SCSU Academy for Co-Teaching and Collaboration. Definition and Purpose: Teachers at all levels of education are increasingly asked to draw on their collaborative skills to meet the needs of today’s learners. Originally developed in the Special Education domain, coteaching involves two teachers working together with groups of students and sharing the planning, organization, delivery and assessment of instruction, as well as the physical space. Coteaching is a powerful framework that provides new opportunities for enhancing student learning. The use of co-teaching among university faculty members has continued to garner national interest and is the focus of this FLC. Since having two instructors available for class is rarely fiscally possible, this FLC will explore the many ways the concept of co-teaching can be utilized in not only the delivery of instruction, but in assignments and coursework. The purpose of this FLC will be to: Explore the background on co-teaching and how it has been used at SCSU and at the national level. Examine the findings on the benefits and drawbacks of co-teaching Explore ways to integrate co-teaching into a college level course including modeling, assignments and assessment Plan and implement a course that utilizes co-teaching pedagogy for the spring 2014 semester Reflect and assess the impact co-teaching had on both the instructor and students in the classroom Commitments of members: Members will commit to meeting with the group for work sessions regularly according to a schedule. o Fall Convocation Orientation and Work Session – Thursday, August 22nd , 2013, 3:00-7:00 pm.
