Position:
THE ORGANISATION:
The Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation (“LNAC”) is a member-based body corporate
registered under the Commonwealth Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act
2006 (the CATSI Act). The members are represented by a Board of Directors which is
legally responsible for administering the corporation in accordance with the CATSI Act and
establishing broad policies and objectives for the corporation. The Chief Executive Officer
(“CEO”) is responsible for implementing the policies and objectives established by the Board
of Directors and managing the day-to-day activities of the corporation.
The LNAC is the peak advocacy and support agency for the Larrakia people, the traditional
landowners of the Greater Darwin area. Initially established in 1998 to represent the Native
Title interests of the Larrakia people, the LNAC has since evolved into a vital service delivery
organisation focussed on addressing the social, cultural and economic aspirations of the
Larrakia people by initiating and administering programs, projects and services for the
broader Aboriginal community.
The members of LNAC are those Aboriginal persons who, under traditional law and custom,
hold rights and interests to the traditional country (Darwin Harbour, Cox Peninsula, most of
Gunn Point and much of rural Darwin).
LNAC is a not-for-profit organisation and receives the majority of its capital and operating
expenses from the Northern Territory Government, Commonwealth Government and by
entering into business partnerships with the private sector.

PROGRAM DETAILS:
The Project will establish and run an Aboriginal place for families in Palmerston to engage
with each other, schools and mainstream service providers through cultural and community
activities. The place will be run by a reference group of Aboriginal community members to
shape and create an Aboriginal space that is culturally relevant comfortable and engaging
for Aboriginal children and families, as well as building leadership group for the Palmerston
Aboriginal community. We will also increase engagement by families with schools and bring
together a number of service providers under one roof with transport and cultural support to
improve overall service delivery and engagement of Aboriginal families. In this place,
Larrakia Nation will deliver a number of activities that are targeted not only towards
engagement with service providers but also the inter-generational transfer of cultural
knowledge, traditions and practices. This will be achieved through facilitating
intergenerational play group, bush tucker demonstrations, painting, weaving, screen printing,
traditional dance workshops and didgeridoo playing and clap stick workshops. A significant
component to this program will be supporting social enterprise to develop and maintain
Aboriginal people’s cultural knowledge whilst at the same time enable community members
to sustain livelihoods based on this cultural knowledge.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
Coordinate the Aboriginal leadership group in shaping the space and to ensure the
outcomes of the program are achieved and that children and families have an opportunity to
engage with culture, education and other services to meet their individual needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Participate in the centres projects and activities.
2. Promote and encourage collaboration of activities/events with all service
providers and the broader community.
3. Support the Coordinator and community members to develop a reference group
and collect data that will inform the physical space of the centre as well as
activities that the community has identified as engaging.
4. Promote the centre to the broader community, ensuring that people are aware of
its relevance to them and their families and to promote and develop social
networks amongst children and families.
5. Participate in activities for young people such as school excursions to the centre
and support the transmission of cultural knowledge to those who attend.
6. Promote the centre and activities within the Palmerston community.
7. Assist in maintaining the building to an acceptable and hygienic standard.
8. Develop and maintain effective communications with cultural entrepreneurs, staff,
clients, suppliers and other external stakeholders;
9. Assist the Coordinator with activities for children and families attending the centre
including the purchase materials/stationery required to run activities.

10. Maintain internal systems and work within Larrakia Nations policies and
procedures.
11. Build capacity of Aboriginal staff and artists, including supporting formal and
informal training and professional development activities.
12. Assist the Project Coordinator with data collection and reporting, including
internal reporting and reporting to funding bodies.

supporting volunteers or any other duties as directed by the Project Coordinator.

Experience in the area of arts/culture and a willingness to promote and engage
with young people and families who may attend the centre.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Aboriginal culture.
Ability to work closely with the Aboriginal community in establishing a
reference/leadership group that will inform and shape the relevance of centre to
the community’s needs.
Strong skills in community engagement with an emphasis on promoting and/or
restoring the social functioning of individuals, families, groups and the broader
community.
Demonstrated skill in administration.
Knowledge of the local services and agencies and the ability to respond to a
person`s immediate referral needs.
Experience and competence in the use of a range of information technologies
and applications, including the internet, spread sheet, database and word
processing applications
Highly developed cross cultural, interpersonal, oral and written communication
skills.
NT Manual Driver’s licence.
