OU-HCOM Student Immunization Requirements, Serologic Proof of Immunity & TB Screening The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) requires documentation of immunization and vaccination of all students. Requirements are based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for healthcare personnel. All OU-HCOM students are considered healthcare personnel (HCP) because they have direct contact with patients beginning in year 1 through Clinical and Community Experiences (CCE). The following immunization documentation is required BY JUNE 1st: o Tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, acellular pertussis (Tdap) One Tdap vaccine, either Adacel® or Boostrix®, is required within 10 years prior to matriculation. o Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) Appropriate vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella is 2 doses of live measles and mumps vaccines given on or after the first birthday and separated by 28 days or more, and at least 1 dose of live rubella vaccine. o Varicella or chickenpox 2 doses of varicella vaccine given age appropriately, OR history of varicella or herpes zoster based on physician diagnosis, OR laboratory evidence of immunity. o Hepatitis B Three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine given at appropriate intervals is considered a series. o Influenza vaccine is required annually during flu season. Please note: Laboratory antibody titer testing, which will determine serologic proof of immunity is required and may be done after orientation as per academic calendar. Students choosing to obtain their antibody titers ahead of time must submit ACTUAL LABORATORY REPORTS for the following: o Measles, Mumps and/or Rubella - positive or equivocal antibody titers (rubeola Igg, mumps Igg, rubella Igg) are evidence of immunity. o Varicella - positive or equivocal antibody titer (varicella Igg) is evidence of immunity. o Hepatitis B – positive or reactive antibody titer (hepatitis B surface antibody or HBsAB) is evidence of immunity. Tuberculosis (TB) screening is mandatory for all students in Health Professions. Students with no prior TB testing or with previous negative tuberculosis test results are required to have an initial screening via two-step TB skin tests (TST) performed by an OU-HCOM designated provider after orientation and as scheduled on the academic calendar. Two-step TB testing consists of 1 TST application with a reading 48 – 72 hours later AND another TST application and reading 1 – 2 weeks after the initial testing. o Students with a history of positive TB skin tests (greater or equal to 10 mm) must submit the following documentation from a licensed healthcare provider: positive TST results, all TB blood tests and chest x-rays, and/or prophylactic antibiotic treatment for Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI). *The Immunization Status Report, page 2, must be signed by a currently licensed healthcare provider. Students may submit childhood immunization records, school health records, health department or state database documents (example: Impactsiis.org is Ohio’s vaccine registry) in lieu of this form. All documentation, including the Immunization Status Report, should be mailed to: OU-HCOM, 1 Ohio University, 055 Grosvenor Hall, Athens, OH 45701 Attention: Kim McCunn 2/2/2015 KM (page 1)
