Dear Forensics Enthusiasts,
On behalf of the Barton Forensics Society, we warmly invite you to ‘The Hill’
on January 18th and 19th in Great Bend, Kansas at Barton Community College. Our
schedule offers competitors the opportunity to participate in two forms of debate
and twelve individual events including; six preliminary rounds of NPDA-style
debate, four preliminary rounds of NFA-LD, and two preliminary rounds of
individual events. Debate out-rounds will be contingent on entry, scheduling allows
for quarter-finals. Debate events will be offered in two divisions, novice and open.
All individual events with thirty or more entries will break to semi-finals. ‘The Hill’
will also offer Improvised Duet Acting with fifteen minutes of preparation time. Our
tournament schedule provides the optimal format for competitors involved in both
individual events and debate. Students wishing to compete in NFA-LD are not
excluded from individual events; however NFA-LD participants are limited to one

debate events, as well as the top 6 speakers. Finalist in all individual events will

Improvised Duet Acting
Event Rules and Requirements
Description:
IDA is an improvised acting exercise composed of two students who portray an original
scene created after drawing the subjects. The scene should establish two characters, a
situation or problem and a solution to the conflict.
Topics:
Each IDA team will draw three topics that include each of the following areas: characters,
situation, and location. From the three topics drawn, each IDA team shall choose one. Topics will be generic in nature
requiring improvisation and not impersonation. For example, proper nouns are not appropriate topics.
The drawings for topics shall be held in a room apart from the preparation room. Actors
may not discuss their topics or ideas with others (including teammates and coaches). No
printed matter, notes, manuscripts or other media may be used.
Rules:
1. Each IDA team will have 20 minutes to prepare.
2. The IDA will be 4 - 7 minutes in length. This includes the introduction. Participants
will be penalized if time limits are not observed.
3. An actor may portray only one character throughout the seven minute presentation.
No additional characters can be used for the introduction.
4. A brief narrated introduction shall be used in establishing the setting and characters in
the scene.
5. All dialogue must be the original work of the contestants.
6. Stage properties (props) or costumes shall be prohibited with the exception of two
chairs (desks may be substituted). This includes your clothes, hair, jewelry, shoes, pockets, etc. . . .
7. Students shall not repeat nor copy any scene they have previously performed at that
tournament. A repeated scene is defined as a repetition of dialogue, characters, and
conflict structure. This means an IDA team must repeat all three elements to be in
violation of this rule.
Sweepstakes Formula: NPDA Wins/Byes = 6 pts; 1st = 24 pts, 2nd = 20 pts, Sems = 16 pts, Quarters = 8
pts. NFA-LD Wins/Byes= 3 pts; 1st= 12 points, 2nd= 10 points, Sems= 8 points, Quarters= 4 points. IE
Finalists; 1st = 12 points, 2nd Place = 10 points, 3rd Place = 8 points, 4th Place = 6 points, 5th Place = 4
