JOB DESCRIPTION AND SELECTION CRITERIA
College Nurse
Department
Domestic Bursar
Salary
Grade 5 of the University Salary Scale: £24,057 to £28,695 per
annum (discretionary to £31,342 pa). Calculated pro rata for part
time hours.
Hours
650 hours over a year (34% of the full-time hours of 1898 per
year) with the majority of hours during term-time.
Contract type
Permanent following a satisfactory completion of a 6 month
probationary period.
Reporting to
Domestic Bursar
Contact
Domestic Bursar, college Nurses and Doctors, students, staff,
Fellows.
The post holder will be entitled to take a free lunch when on duty
and the kitchen is open.
Holiday entitlement for full time hours is 30 days and for part-time
hours this will be 10.2 days including the College's closed periods
of five days at Christmas, plus bank holidays. Due to operational
requirements, you may be required to work on any of the bank
holidays, for which time off in lieu will be provided.

information
The Colleges operates a contributory pension scheme (subject to
eligibility) and the opportunity to join the Colleges’ health care
scheme.
The College will pay for RCN, OCNA and CPR annual
subscription costs.
This post requires a satisfactory report from the Disclosure and
Barring Service.
Parking is not available; however the College provides a bus pass
scheme.

Wadham College
Wadham is one of the largest of the colleges of the University of Oxford, with
approximately 450 undergraduates, 170 postgraduates, around 70 Fellows and over
100 staff. Founded in 1610, Wadham celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2010. It
has an annual turnover of some £10M and reserves in excess of £100M.

The College’s Governing Body consists of the Warden and Fellows and is chaired by
the Warden. The current Warden is Lord Macdonald QC, who came to Wadham in
September 2012, and is one of the country’s top criminal lawyers and a former
Director of Public Prosecutions.

General Overview
The College Nurse is available primarily during term-time for general advice on
health matters and will see anyone who is unwell in College or needs treatment. The
College Doctors work with the College Nurse to provide professional medical advice
and support when required.
Responsibilities and duties
Surgeries
1. To hold daily surgeries (except Saturdays and Sundays) during term-time in
order to provide primary health care for all College members and staff.
2. To refer to the College Doctors all cases beyond your competence.
3. To liaise with and assist the College Doctors during surgeries, as required.
4. To report (or encourage self-reporting) incidents of College members who are
confined to bed as a result of illness, with due regard to confidentiality, to:
a) the College welfare team
b) the student’s tutor
c) the Senior Tutor.
5. To attend people, reported to be ill, in their rooms as necessary.
6. To ensure all First Aid Boxes are fully stocked at all times.
7. To counsel College members in medical matters.
Administrative Tasks
8. To keep proper records in accordance with current professional standards.
9. To maintain IT skills necessary to communicate with students and colleagues.
10. To maintain contact with the Domestic Bursar, Dean, Welfare Dean, Senior Tutor
and other relevant College Officers.
11. To advise the Senior Tutor and Domestic Bursar on special requirements of
residents arising from medical conditions.
12. To maintain membership of the College Nurses’ Association and appropriate
professional development.
13. To attend the induction events for Freshers during 0th week in Michaelmas Term.
14. To attend the termly meeting of the Welfare Committee.
15. To attend First Aid meetings and any relevant welfare meetings
16. Other tasks as reasonably requested by the College Doctors and/or Domestic
Bursar.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential
1. Nursing qualification or equivalent and a level of medical expertise that includes
knowledge of processes, products and regulations.
2. Demonstrable experience of working in a similar nursing role.
3. Ability to consider issues from a college point of view and an awareness of the
impact of your own activities on the achievement of the College’s objectives.
4. Ability to use interpersonal skills to work with colleagues as a team on a
consistent, long-term basis, and to influence others through effective
communication, both oral and written.
5. To identify and meet the needs of both internal and external customers in order
to deliver a high-quality service.
6. To analyse issues, make informed judgements, take appropriate actions and
accept responsibility for results.
7. To sustain a positive attitude towards work and colleagues, and to perform above
and beyond the immediate needs of the situation.
8. An ability to adapt successfully to changing circumstances and identify fresh
approaches.
9. Ability to understand and implement H&S information with respect to safe
practice
10. Ability to follow and carry out management instructions
11. To maintain appropriate confidentiality
12. To maintain development by undertaking training suitable to the post
13. To be presentable and maintain dress and department standards
Desirable
1. Knowledge of basic H&S and Fire Regulations
2. Previous experience of working in large institutions e.g. schools, colleges, hotels
etc.
3. A satisfactory report from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
