Fall Sports’ Season Highlights:

The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams had another strong season this 2014 season. With
the coaching staff of Robert Youngblood and Coach Taylor Colbert leading both teams to
several Invitational championships as well the state competition. The guys shocked all by
placing 4th in the State Championships and Sofia Zarate medaled by placing 17th with
teammate Gaby Go 39th. Senior Diego Zarate had an incredible season as he placed 1st in
the Regional Championship and 3rd in the state. Diego Zarate also took 1st as he won the
county championship and won "every" Invitational he ran this season including the
Manhattan Invitational in NY. Diego Zarate was named in the Gazette 1st Team ALL County
and named the "Runner of the Year" in Montgomery County, and was picked 1st Team ALL Met by the Washington Post and 1st team MD Boys All State. Brendan Rhoderick was named
2nd team All County as was Sofia Zarate.

The Northwest Varsity Boys Soccer team finished their 17th season with a record of 6-4-3
and earned its 4th Division 4A West title in 6 years. After a 0-3 start the boys went on a 9
game unbeaten streak and didn't lose again until a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to regional
finalist Gaithersburg in the 2nd round of the playoffs. The Jaguars were one of the best
defensive teams in the county surrendering only 13 goals all season and just 6 in the final
10 games. This was thanks largely in part to a stellar defense anchored by the goalkeeping
tandem of Matthew Mighty and Petur Bogan. In addition the team had a strong back line of
Jorge Tello, Christian Nlend, Christian Loch, and Josh Hartman. Henry Gomez and
Frankie Vieira were strong in attack and Emil Owusu and Sulaymin Jeng led the midfield.
The Jaguars were a relatively young team this year and the future looks bright.

Coach Rich Burke was really proud of the JV Boys Soccer team this year. A variety of
players contributed to the successful record of 5-3-1. The most exciting win of the year was
beating Walter Johnson HS with a 1-0 victory. The team was able to score 23 goals on the
season while only allowing 10 goals. Captains Bobby Gicheru and Eduardo Araujo
provided the necessary leadership to keep the team focused. Coach Burke would like to
thank all of the guys for their effort this past season and looks forward to next year.

After a challenging 2013 season, the Northwest Golf team moved down to Division 2 for
2014. After a competitive tryout, the team returned its three most experienced players, EJ
Dillon, Zach Burkinshaw, and Ben Bruning. It also introduced five freshmen to the
team. They included Brett Babb, Pierce Barbour, Seth Menefee, Shane Parcelles, and
Justin Violette. Right out of the gates, Northwest got off to a great start, winning its first
match in resounding fashion. The team went on to win 17 matches with only one
loss. Unfortunately, that one loss was the difference as they lost the division crown to
Clarksburg. During the season, the team shot several of its lowest rounds in team
history. The lowest round being a 195 in their last match of the season. At the District
Tournament, Northwest continued its great run, shooting a 321, allowing the team to
qualify at the State Tournament. In a competitive state tournament, the team failed to
qualify for the finals, but EJ Dillon and Zach Burkinshaw made it to the second
day. Neither golfer placed, but they finished their golf careers on the last day possible.


The Girls Varsity Volleyball team had an outstanding year this year, they ended with a
record of 14-4 on a team of 11 juniors and 2 freshman. The girls cruised through playoffs
defeating very tough teams to claim the Regional Championship for the first time ever!
They continued and were a State Finalist for the first time ever as well, having everyone
returning next year they are looking forward to another great season in 2015! Coach Blake
is so proud of her girls accomplishments this season and the way they continued to improve
throughout the season. Emma Liller was named to the All Gazette Team – second team
and Gabby Bennett was named to the All Gazette Team – honorable mention. Coach
Blake was named All Gazette Coach of the Year!

Coach Tara Smith had another great year with her young lady jags. The team went 5-6 for
the season but played hard every game and had fun! The girls and coach are looking to have
a fabulous season next year.

The Girls Soccer team had a historic season winning the 4A West Division title for the first
time. In the postseason they too made program history by making it to the regional final (elite
8) for the first time. The playoff run started with a first round 2-0 win against Wootton, in
the second round they defeated division rival QO 2-1, and in the third round they defeated
Gaithersburg 2-0. In the regional final game they lost to nationally ranked Whitman 1-0 who
went on to win the tournament. The team finished with a 10-6-1 record going undefeated in
the month of October. They were a hard working team that played an exciting brand of soccer
to watch. In the classroom the girls’ soccer team were the highest achievers in GPA. Coach
Kinnetz is looking forward to continuing the success into 2015 season

The JV Girls Soccer was coached again this year by Mike Colopy, who led the girls to a 3-6
season. Despite not winning too many games, the girls always had a positive attitude and
winning spirit. Coach Colopy looks forward to coming back and having terrific season in
2015.

Coach Samantha Schoonmaker returned for another year of the JV Cheer team. This year
she had the girls perform at both pep rallies, at football games, and they again went to the
Magruder Exhibition!! This is helping the ladies increase their skill and allows them to
become more comfortable for when they compete as varsity!

Team Handball came out of the blocks in perfect stride this year with Captain Seong Kim
assisting Coach Hinman in setting up the new Google application “Team APP.” This software
app was designed to connect with all athletes, parents, coaches, referees and alumni and was
instrumental in keeping communication in “real time” for all people involved with Team
Handball. It was a huge success!!! This year we had a full roster of 18 members by the third
day of school and had to turn some students away during the second week of practice. Our
team ran high with females and each of them contributed goals and team spirit all season.
Our Jag Award went to a much beloved player who came to every practice, gave his best every
time out on the court, and who encouraged and persevered to become an even better skilled
teammate of the sport. Eddie Goolsby, returning to the team for a second season, brought a
good attitude mixed with fun and laughter.

Fall Sports’ Season Highlights (continued):

The Northwest 2014-15 season Girls Tennis team coached by Coach Marie Franklin
opened with 18 players. Our co-captains, senior Bianca Da Silva and junior Joyce Zhou
provided both solid leadership and play throughout the season. Bianca anchored the
Doubles 1 court with her skill and experience throughout the season with partner Mrinalini
Padmakumar. Joyce Zhou played solidly in the Singles 2 slot with power and agility,
winning several matches. Our number 1 Singles player, junior Ashley Riddle, new to the
team, but not to tennis was a strong addition to our team and line-up. With tournament
experience and years of playing, Ashley won most of her matches throughout the
season. Our other singles players, junior Alyssa Johnson and freshman Sela Futuran, both
experienced tennis players but new to singles played competitively in every match. Our
doubles team of juniors Jahnavi Mulralidharan and Hannah Shraim played well and battled
against their opponents in every match. Junior Timera Talley anchored Doubles 3 and
partnered up with junior Shreya Gheewala, freshmen Jessica Lou, and Ira Subrahmaniam
during the competitive season.
With newly revised Divisions in Girls Tennis this season and having graduated several
veteran players in June, we knew this would be a very challenging season for the team. The
team practiced consistently and worked very hard at practices. The teams’ work ethic
never wavered and the ladies put in time on the courts during the week and on
weekends. We have several strong and dedicated players that have created a solid
foundation for our team this season: Claire Yoo, Anika Shastri, Atifah Khan, Deekshitha
Tella, and Emily Pearce each bringing with them the love for tennis and desire to win. We
look forward to a competitive season next year…..we’ll be ready!

The Field Hockey team showed a lot of fight this year with their 6-5-1 season. Second year
Coach Holly Johnson, saw huge improvements from the girls throughout the entire season.
The team really came together by the end, showing a lot of heart and dedication to each other.
There was a tight bond amongst the girls, which made the season all that more special. The
team only lost four seniors, so there is a lot of experienced players that will be coming back
for the season of 2015.

JV Field Hockey had a fantastic season, with a record of 6-2-1. Coach John Johnson joined
the program for a second year, and brought a great positive outlook for the team and
knowledge of the game! Due to his positive presence and great attitude the girls worked
extremely hard for him and strived for success, which they achieved!! He not only coached
the JV team, but he also helped out a great deal with the varsity team. Coach Johnson is
looking forward to another fabulous year in 2015!

The JV Football team finished a successful season with a record of 6-2. Defensie coordinator
Austin Freeman led the defense, which gave up a mere 11 points per game and created a
ton of turnovers. The offense averaged three touchdowns per game and progressed
tremendously at running the no-huddle offense. The varsity team will continue to be a force
with the amount of talent that is moving through the football program. Coach Matt Blank is
already looking forward to building upon this year's success with the freshman who will
return next season.

Fall Sports’ Season Highlights (continued):

The Varsity Football team captured their second consecutive 4A State Championship
defeating Old Mill at M&T Bank Stadium 34-31. The football team ended up with a 13-1
record and ranked #2 in the Maryland AP State Poll and #3 in the Washington Post. The
team was led on offense by EJ Lee who rushed for 1748 yards on 180 carries averaging 9.7
yards per carry and 25 touchdowns and Mark Pierce who threw for 2344 yards and 34
touchdowns. Brendan Thompson and Chuck Anya were named co-defensive players of the
year as they were the heart and soul of the defense, making calls and adjustments
throughout every game. Troy Lefeged earned the special teams player of the year for the
Jags by blocking 6 kicks and making many game changing tackles.
Some highlights of the 2014 season include a dominating performance against Seneca
Valley (46-6) allowing the Jags to hold the King’s Trophy for another year and a nail-biting
last second victory over rival Quince Orchard in the playoffs to capture the 4A West region
title. As a team the Jags scored the third most points in Maryland State history, scoring 603

Spring Sports’ Season Highlights:
We cannot wrap up the spring season without mentioning the weather!! This again was a rough
season to play sports. Most teams had to move around or cancel games all together. I would like to
say thank you to all the teams for your patience and ability to work so well with each other! This was
a hard beginning and everyone worked so well using gym space and allowing all teams to get in a
practice.

later this summer.


playoffs. Their season ended with an 8-1 loss to the eventual 4A state champion
Gaithersburg Trojans. They have a lot of returning players that contributed to this year’s
team, and are looking to do big things in the future.

The JV Baseball team had another good year under coach, Kyle Culver. The JV team finished

the team. The tennis team and managers also participated in a community service event
during Earth Week, giving back to our community. We had a terrific season and are looking
forward to having our courts resurfaced this summer!

Spring Sports’ Season Highlights (continued):

The Allied Softball team coached by Amy Mason and Maggie Hinman hit the ground
running with a full roster in time for the first practice, several rookies leading up to some
spectacular hitting and fielding. Even though we lost to Sherwood, the division champion,
each and every player brought skills of defense and offense never demonstrated in any
game. There was a triple play and a grand slam events, two aspects never done before
during a season. Attitudes and team spirit were tremendous which made this year a
winning season for all involved. It was fun and serious- the way sports are meant to be!

The Boys and Girls Track & Field team had quite a season and ended with the State
Championships at Morgan State University. Several track athletes will have committed to
continuing their track careers. Diego Zarate has committed to Virginia Tech, Gaby Go will run
for the famous Coach Valmon at the University of Maryland. Brendan Rhoderick and Aaron
Beidleman will continue their education and participate in track at Bridgewater College. The
girls were runner-up in the Division, County and Region Championships. The boys took
home the Divisional Championship, County Championship and the Regional
Championship. The guys would place 3rd in the State Championships as they were without
the services of Diego (ill). Both teams also had numerous individual successes as well:


2015 was an historic season for NW softball. Bridgette Barbour threw two no hitters and a
perfect game en route to the school strikeout record--she fanned 178 batters to break a 15
year old record. The team won 18 games, won its second ever region title, and advanced to
the state championship game. The win total and finals appearance make this season the
most successful in NW Softball history. The team has no graduating seniors and will look to
contend for a state title again in 2016.

Overall the JV softball team with Coach Sean Gallagher won 10 games and lost only 2.
They scored 217 runs giving up only 61. We had a great group of girls and we were strong
in all facets of the game; hitting, fielding and base running. More importantly, everyone
played and we all had a blast.

Spring Sports’ Season Highlights (continued):

The 2015 Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse team posted an overall record of 6-8 and ranked 4th in
the 4A/3A West Division – both of which are marked improvements from last season. Led
by first year head coach, Jon Kravitz, and senior captains Cory Hathaway, Chase Notari
(Jaguar Award recipient), and Hunter Thompson, the team demonstrated great
improvement and teamwork throughout the season, consistently competing at a high level.
One of the many highlights was a 14-0 win against Paint Branch High School – the first
recorded shutout for Northwest’s varsity lacrosse program. Unfortunately, the 2015
campaign came to an end after a close loss in the playoffs.
In recognition of their respective performances throughout the season, the Montgomery
County Lacrosse Coaches Association (MCLCA) awarded 4 Jaguars with All-Division honors:
Cory Hathaway (1st Team), Chase Notari (2nd Team), Hunter Thompson (2nd Team), and TJ
Patterson (2nd).
Coach Kravitz is looking forward to building on the team’s development and success for a
great 2016 season – let’s go Jags!

The 2015 Boys’ Junior Varsity Lacrosse team posted an overall record of 6-4 under new
head coach and Northwest High School alumnus, Iggy Goncharuk. Led by captains Joey
Davis, Daniel Haghjou, Dennis Kim, and Shane Parcelles, the boys showed great
improvement in their skills and teamwork throughout the season. Coach Goncharuk is
looking forward to riding this wave of momentum into a great and promising 2016 season.

The Girls Lacrosse team under the leadership of Coach Holly Johnson, had a great season
this year winning 4 games more than last year with a record of 6-8. The team really focused
on the fundamentals of lacrosse and it has worked out to their benefit. Coach Johnson was
very proud of her team’s efforts throughout the season. She is very excited to build her
program and see where she can take NW!

The JV Girls Lacrosse ended with a season of 3-6. The girls were coached by 2nd year coach
John Johnson. There was a lot of young talent on the team this year, and with a few years of
coaching these girls will start to turn this program around!

Re: Academic Analysis of Student-Athletes, OVERVIEW of the 2014-2015 School Year
Cc:
Assistant Principals and All Coaches
Dear Mrs. Dempsey:
I have completed the Academic Analysis for our student–athletes in sports at Northwest High School for the
2014-2015 school year. I found some interesting information while looking at the data from the reports cards
which were distributed each sports season:

A total of 1064 student-athletes were listed on the rosters of our 45 teams. That is an increase of 68
players from last year. On average, 354 students participated in each of our three sport’s seasons.

During the three sports seasons, a total of 619 “Minds in Motion” awards were earned by Northwest
student-athletes. The “Minds in Motion” awards are given to those student-athletes who have a GPA of
3.25 or better while participating in interscholastic sports. That means that 60.31% of our studentathletes received a “Minds in Motion” award during the school year. Our “Minds in Motion” awards
increased by 28 student athletes from last year.

The top five teams were Girls JV Lacrosse (3.79), Girls JV Soccer (3.70), JV Field Hockey (3.69), Poms
(3.64), and Varsity Softball (3.62).

Of the top 10 teams, 9 were girls’ sports and 1 was a boys’ sport. Of the lowest 10 teams, 8 were boys’
sports, 1 was a girls’ sports, and 1 co-ed sport.

Overall, 134 student-athletes earned a 4.0 (straight A’s) while participating in athletics, an increase of
12 student athletes from last year.

Every team in Spring Season earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher, the lowest GPA was only a 3.11!! Fall and
Spring season both had GPA over 3.33!! Our lowest team GPA was only a 2.61.

Of the 45 teams, 40/45 (88%) had a 3.0 or higher and 13/45 (28%) had a 3.5 or higher!!

After report cards were distributed during the three sports seasons, a total of only 28 students became
academically ineligible. Only 1 student athlete during the spring season.
Please see the attached sheets for specific data on each team and season.
Respectfully,
Anne Rossiter
Athletic Director

We want to give a special “thank you” to the following people:

effective, personal leadership is one of the keystones to our program.
Our Administrators: Mrs. Lance Dempsey, Mr. Tim Britton, Mr. John Robertson, Mr. Matt Niper
and Mr. Matt Paushter. Our administrators have contributed a lot to our athletic program. Besides
attending almost every home event, our administrators have worked with students and coaches alike when
we were faced with challenging situations. Mrs. Dempsey has done a lot to improve the spirit and
enthusiasm of the students, both on the field and in the stands. We want to specifically thank Mr. Britton
who is the administrator who oversees the athletic program.
The Assistant Athletic Directors, Game Managers, and Ticket Managers: Jesse Smith, Ellen Toy,
Doris Giraud, and Walter Horbatuk. These people did a great job of covering events and making sure
that things ran smoothly. We truly appreciate the long hours and many, many nights that they spend with
Northwest Athletics. We cannot host athletic events without the work of these people.
Mike Bednarcik and the PE Staff. It is a pleasure to work with the PE department. PE and Athletics
continue to accomplish joint projects, such as the semi-annual maintenance of the weight room equipment
and the work on the gym floors. They also allow us to use the PE offices to hold our referees during games
throughout the year.
The Health Room Staff of Carrie Sypes and Karen Zoller. Every concern – big or small – was attended
to by these wonderful staff members. Carrie and Karen are great resources as well as effective problem
solvers. We appreciate their dedication to the wellbeing of our students.
Lori Knight and Kathy McCauley in the Business Office. For their patience and assistance in allowing
me to learn all aspects of money!! Keeping track of thousands of dollars in dozens accounts is a challenge.
We appreciate their efforts.
Dr.Craig Miller and Trainer Lauren Lyons. Dr. Miller is the founder of the “Athletic Trainer’s Program”
for Northwest Athletics. Lauren Lyons has built a tremendous relationship with our athletes, their parents,
and our coaches! She is valuable new member to the Jaguar athletic staff.
Greg Lipford and The Building Service staff. One of the strengths of Northwest High School is the
Building Service staff. Greg Lipford and his crew do outstanding work. Building service went above and
beyond the call of duty for NW Athletics this year…. Every time I called on the radio, they were there and
willing to help!!
