Galileo Leadership Consortium Mission The Galileo Leadership Consortium will advance the development of teacher leadership to ensure high levels of learning for all. Goals The Galileo Leadership Consortium will: develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions of teacher leaders which include servant leadership, collaboration, facilitation, best practices, action research, and systems thinking; support and extend the influence of Galileo Leaders in order to create and sustain teacher leadership throughout the organization; envision new ways of working and learning by establishing relationships among K-12 organizations, community colleges, universities, and the Galileo Institute for Teacher Leadership at Oakland University; and maintain and expand the influence of Galileo Alumni. The Galileo Leadership Consortium was launched in 1997 with funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and now is sustained by the Consortium’s organizations, foundation, local businesses, and industries. The Consortium provides a teacher leadership development program for educational organizations in Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb counties. The Board, organization’s liaisons, and the facilitation team support the Consortium’s activities. This capacity-building curriculum focuses on developing communities of learners and leaders who collaborate to renew organizations and ensure learning for all. Academy participants assess their own learning and make contributions to their organizations and the education profession. The focus of the Consortium is to improve and sustain the achievement of all students by: building teacher and principal leadership capacity, promoting, supporting and celebrating teacher leaders; forging a vision of effective teaching, creating professional learning communities, engaging in data driven decision-making, and fostering a commitment to develop institutional capacity for change. In 2004, the Galileo Consortium entered into partnership with Oakland University to create The Galileo Teacher Leadership Institute. The Institute is dedicated to developing the leadership skills of educators by providing degree programs, research on teacher leadership, conferences, and special events. A unique feature of the partnership is the opportunity for Academy participants to pursue an Educational Specialist degree in teacher leadership as a cohort, receiving twelve credits for participation in the Academy’s two-year seminar series. GALILEO TEACHER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE AT OAKLAND UNIVERSITY GALILEO ALUMNI BOARD GALILEO TEACHER LEADERSHIP ACADEMY The Academy is a two-year seminar series designed to develop teacher leaders. The curriculum addresses educational and leadership issues and themes. Instructional strategies are based on principles of collaboration, inquiry, problem-solving, reflection, informational systems and technology. Teacher leaders learn from national experts, case studies, dialogues, field investigations, team building, study groups, readings, reflective journaling, and action research. The Alumni Board was established by the Consortium Board to maintain and expand the influence of the Galileo Alumni. A Galileo Leader from a past cohort is selected by their organization to serve on the Alumni Board. Their responsibilities include: advocating the importance of teacher leadership as a means for improving learning for both students and adults, and sharing best practices, strategies, articles, books, and providing on-going support to current Galileo Leaders.
