Overview Indiana University Health Bloomington Laboratory Mission Indiana University Health Bloomington Laboratory The IU Health Bloomington Laboratory exists to provide accurate and timely test information for the enhancement of patient care. The IU Health Bloomington Laboratory provides comprehensive, integrated inpatient and outpatient laboratory services for South Central Indiana. The IU Health Bloomington Laboratory maintains a central comprehensive College of American Pathologists (CAP) and The Joint Commission (TJC)accredited laboratory located within IU Health Bloomington. The IU Health Bloomington Laboratory operates 24 hours a day throughout the year and provides STAT, rapid-turnaround, and routine anatomic and clinical pathology testing to support inpatient and outpatient operating rooms (general surgery, obstetrics, gynecologic oncology, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery), intensive care units, coronary care unit, hospital wards [including obstetrics, pediatrics, medicine, and surgery], chemotherapy infusion clinic, and emergency center. The IU Health Bloomington Laboratory also provides an extensive Point-Of-Care Testing Program for IU Health Bloomington (blood gases, electrolytes, activated clotting times, and bedside glucose monitoring). This doctoral-level expertise is available for clinical consultation 24 hours per day. The pathologists qualify for hospital staff privileges at IU Health Bloomington (e.g., pathologists must be American Board of Pathology [ABP]-Board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and must have demonstrated competency/proficiency in designated specialty areas of pathology). The IU Health Bloomington Laboratory provides regular conferences for the medical staff of IU Health Bloomington. The IU Health Bloomington Laboratory Outreach Program services the majority of physician offices, clinics, and hospital customers within Monroe and the surrounding 5 counties. Outreach specimens are processed concurrently with hospital inpatient and outpatient specimens; and are tested 24 hours a day. IU Health Bloomington Laboratory performs 98% of all tests in house, with esoteric tests sent to IU Health Bloomington’s medical testing partner Mayo Medical Laboratories. All laboratory test results including surgical pathology, cytology, and reference laboratory test results (via bidirectional interface with Mayo Medical Laboratories) are reported via the laboratory information system (LIS).
