A MESSAGE FROM COMPLIANCE

Welcome back! I hope you’ve had a great summer and are ready for another successful year with the back-toback Big Sky Presidents’ Cup Champion NAU Lumberjacks! Since my last letter, NAU Athletics added former women’s basketball student-athlete Beth Hopper to our compliance staff. Beth and I are welcoming every team back to campus with a beginning of the year rules education meeting. Team LAA isn’t excluded!

I’ve already communicated with many of you. Thanks for always asking before you act!

Complian ce isn’t the job of two individuals, but rather a joint effort of coaches, student-athletes, staff, and boosters. Together we ensure that NAU Athletics remains a model for Division I athletics in the Big Sky and across the nation.

Now is a great time for reminders:

WHO IS A BOOSTER?

 A booster is a “representative of athletics interests” and as a member of the LAA, you are a booster and retain that identity indefinitely.

WHO IS A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE?

A prospective student-athlete is a student who has entered classes for the ninth grade regardless of athletic ability. A student ceases to be a prospective student-athlete when he/she enrolls and attends classes in a regular term at a four-year university.

WHAT ARE EXTRA BENEFITS?

Extra benefits are goods or services that are not available to the general student body or not expressly permitted under NCAA rules. Extra benefits include, but are not limited to free or discounted: merchandise, meals, transportation, loans, entertainment, or housing. Boosters cannot provide extra benefits to student-athletes or their families and friends. Boosters also cannot provide benefits

(considered recruiting inducements by the NCAA) to prospective student-athletes or their families and friends.

CAN I PROVIDE A MEAL TO A STUDENT-ATHLETE OR TEAM?

Yes, under NCAA rules, you may provide a meal on an infrequent or occasional basis. Please complete an occasional meal form with the Athletics Compliance Office for approval and documentation.

CAN I INVITE A STUDENT-ATHLETE TO AN EVENT HOSTED BY A CHARITABLE, NON-PROFIT,

OR EDUCATIONAL ENTITY?

Yes, please complete a community service request form at

 http://nauathletics.com/community_service_request for approval and documentation. You may contact

Megan Greene at (928) 523-4495 for more information.

CAN I CONTACT A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE?

You may not contact a prospective student-athlete on behalf of NAU Athletics in any way. You may continue established relationships (family or friend) and unavoidable incidental contact through normal course of business.

CAN I EMPLOY A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE OR STUDENT-ATHLETE?

Yes, employment is permissible through normal course of business. Please contact the Athletics

Compliance Office should you choose to employ a NAU signee or student-athlete.

HOW CAN I HELP?

 You’ve taken the first step by joining the LAA. Please continue to be the voice for NAU Athletics.

If you have any questions not covered, please contact the Athletics Compliance Office at (928) 523-5353.

Go Jacks,

Syed T. Moinuddin

Associate Athletics Director for Compliance
