NORTH PARK VILLAGE BRANDING SURVEY RESULTS August 20, 2015 RESPONSES 60 respondents QUESTION ONE Our North Park village (Cook Street between Caledonia and Pandora) is in need of a strong brand to amplify its sense of place and define it as the commercial heart of our neighbourhood. Branding a neighbourhood village is so much more than choosing a logo, colour palette and tagline. It is about creating a shared vision and identity about who we are, what we do here and where we are going. It offers businesses and residents an easy way to tell the 'story' of North Park. It establishes the village as a unique destination that residents and community members can connect with emotionally and practically. It also helps strengthen links between a neighborhood association and its village business district. Your input on this survey will help the North Park Neighbourhood Association develop a strong brand for our village. Note: responses for Question One are not statistically accurate as not everyone responded to each part of the question. However, if you mean visual symbology, the combination of residential (houses and condos), small business (various storefronts), recreation (sports fields). However, the area is so diverse that there is no one symbol or combination of visuals that strongly represents this area. North Park is a transitionary point between other areas. 9 NORTH PARK VILLAGE BRANDING SURVEY RESULTS August 20, 2015 funeral home, churches, crystal pool Chickens at Mason Street Farm, the smell of fennel on a warm summer's day, and the the contrasting architectural styles. used paper plates lying around; homeless travel route; poorly groomed public park; Central Park, Crystal Pool, social services (psychiatric housing, youth at risk shelter, women at risk centre) Not sure what you're getting at here? Diversity, walkable Recreational activities Music festivals A thriving village atmosphere Mason St city farm Yoka's coffee Castle building supply Ultra-local businesses. Places of culture, worship and gathering. Contrast with but close to Downtown and Fernwood. Parks, Recreation, Hardware Other than Royal Athletic Park nothing really stands out or symbolizes the North Park area to me!! heritage buildings parks walkable QUESTION SIX What three things would you like to see CHANGED or improved in North Park? nothing nothing nothing Abandoned look of buildings (unkept, need paint) feels like it needs a good sweep!, healthier community more pedestrian and aided pedestrian-focused more garbage and recycling More business diversity; affordable housing get on with co-op housing project at Chambers more activity on footprint of Wellburns and small building parking lot slow traffic on Cook 2. create a feature plaza at Cook & North Park 3. add patios on side streets, sometimes not safe at night severe crackdown on drug users close pot outlets more policing to protect families Less Churches on north park Less crime- buildings broken into often. Someone climbed my balcony and broke into my living room more little restaurants block parties (something between the amelia st block party and fernwood events) allowing businesses to have street presence ie coffee shops having more sidewalk seating another gathering place besides logans Walking and cycling space improved, vegetable gardens promoted, musical/church spaces more open 10 NORTH PARK VILLAGE BRANDING SURVEY RESULTS August 20, 2015 More marked cross-walks or enforcement of 179 of BC HTA (i.e., all intersections are crosswalks). 2) Turn parking lot of Royal Athletic Park into more neighbourhood friendly space. 3) Wider sidewalks on Cook Street. Street People, Garbage clean up, Drug paraphernalia Better pool/centre, traffic calming on Pembroke St (allow parking both sides of street), Better pedestrian crossing infrastructure and signage. The one crosswalk by Castle is too far down. Need another up by North Park St where more people are looking to cross. GREATER PRIDE IN OWNERSHIP LESS GRAFFITI LESS THROUGH STREETS improve road access get the drug users out of the neighbourhood higher density Better control of noise - traffic, drunks at night. Improve sidewalks, widen and resurface. Improve bike routes like Vancouver Greenway. Cook between Pandora and Caledonia revitalized with a sign that says Welcome To North Park, more off-leash dog areas, (but where?) Bikelanes, comunityspace (ie:garden, meeting space), public washroom pedestrian spaces, sidewalks, patios, storefront restoration deal with street people+shopping carts more mental health/drug user facilities (supervised injection site?) a HARDWARE store homelessness no McDonalds or the like; a trolley that goes to the beach; practical amenities such as a post office -and less traffic on Cook St. more input from the community on neighborhood issues, a support network driven by the community for homeless outreach, more new businesses Credit Union, post office, higher parking enforcement Wider sidewalks, more trees, sitting areas, pet water fountain, that children are valued .. Have things in the sidewalk to notice, a play area of natural logs and stumps along the sidewalk I would like to see either Royal Athletic or Crystal Pool Park be used as a dog park at certain times of the year. I would like to see branding in the Village, that reflect how proud North Park residents are of our neighbuorhood. Probably not feasible, but wider sidewalks would be great. North Park has lots of people congregating outside businesses which is great, but then this creates a congestion problem. Traffic calming measures would be great. The area is active and there seem to be a lot of minor traffic accidents from people moving to fast and not paying attention. (Can't think of a third.) 11 NORTH PARK VILLAGE BRANDING SURVEY RESULTS August 20, 2015 Less litter in the parks. Safer Keep it as a low density neighbourhood large increase in available/accessible/public/non-residential parking - flashing crosswalk across from Castle to decrease the danger - enforce landlords to clean litter, weeds, graffitti, urine as these problems deter customers and residents - public garbages need more frequent emptying so trash not laying everywhere General negative view of the neighbourhood, turn our Village in an awesome vibrant spot to hang out (with traffic calming and more crossings for pedestrians), Clear branding and identification of the neighbourhood&village improved traffic flow at North Park village - mix of pedestrians, cars and bikes is a minefield. 2. it's a long-time home to so many people, but people always get the impression that it's a "termporary' neighbourhood. Highlight the long-term residents in the community . . . it's a great neighbourhood to "age in place" . . . More landscaping in the NP Village area on Cook St. Some sense of Identity or name for the NP Village X walk in front of the pharmacy improved improved pedestrian routes, walk-in clinic, get rid of Ocean Grown, more parking, add bank. Add destination businesses Parking increase, Slower Traffic, More new/updated real estate, including clean-up of farm-ish and derelict properties. Better quality of business. Less transient population. graffiti removal coordination More restaurants (including places to go for breakfast and dinner, not just coffee/sandwiches) - More shade trees on sidewalks - More lighting in parks sidewalk tripping hazards corrected; traffic calming on North Park Street; less marajuana shops; property development processes. Signage sense of fun proper landscaping on Cook St. Keep Crystal Pool, don't allow rental housing to sit vacant for years on end, more trees better streetscapes new sidewalks More of a village atmosphere More spaces where people can interact Public garden homeless and addicted street people crosswalk at village centre: NPark/Cook community events More engagement with neighbours. More social equality. A fitting development on the St. Andrews School site. Cleaner, 12 NORTH PARK VILLAGE BRANDING SURVEY RESULTS August 20, 2015 Another cross walk closer to North Park Street, some more trees planted to soften up the look of the street, something that defines the area more improved bike paths/sidewalks more plantings to hide ugly parking lots decreased speed limit in village QUESTION SEVEN What elements of URBAN DESIGN are not working or missing? (e.g. roadways, paths, parks, bike routes, trees, gardens...). What elements are working? List your top three for each. more bike paths less cars more trees Decorative planters, crosswalk at north park and cook, bike racks and improvements to the kid park public food gardens would be awesome more places to sit in the shade wider side walks to accommodate walkers, strollers, scooters (elderly or disabled) etc. Chambers is designated a greenway from the City's years old plan. Nothing done on it Cook St. needs much better pedestrian crossings. Bike parking needed throughout. Better / more extensive tree canopy for shade. What works? The street design with many "T" intersections. Missing: park with playground paths bike routes Working: Urban garden space Parking urban design is not the problem but speeds limits need to be raised on cook and quadra street and widened. repair existing sidewalks and roads before spending on bike lanes. Parking! there is none for visitors that is not 2 hour parking street clean up happens rarely, making the street look dirty need more greenery and paths the pile of rocks outside of north park manor in a tarp has been sitting there for months and makes the street look trashy working -like the new record store- vinyl envy -walking distance to downtown Not working: the sidewalks on cook are too narrow businesses are allowed to use window mirroring or tinting eliminating the presence on the street. slowing traffic along quadra before pandora heading south in the semi-residential areas large apartment setbacks with poor lighting and gardens around the outside. Working: Great Bike Routes Good mix of businesses Solid park presence and distribution Poor pavement quality, lack of bike lanes, appearance of some retail strips as dowdy, rough. Parking lots and grass patches could use more trees to shade, benches beneath, or picnic tables near food trucks. 13 NORTH PARK VILLAGE BRANDING SURVEY RESULTS August 20, 2015 Pedestrian traffic control signal should come on by default and not have to be triggered by pedestrians. 2) Lack of room for sidewalk seating for businesses on Cook Street. 3) Empty space of Royal Athletic Park parking lot (park and ride from downtown?). Traffic calming works on mason (one way), Vancouver (car block at caledonia) and cook (cross walks); needs work on Pembroke and upper cook (George Jay). The businesses are top notch (parsonage, curling club, Larsen, patisserie Danielle, castle, Logan's, little Thai) but there could be more, including a better grocery stores and another pub. Bike routes are fine but more is better! Parking is adequate and free! Sort of covered this above already. There is a lot of pedestrian traffic though the area and they need to be accommodated better. NOT WORKING urban farms are a mess not enough coffee / food outlets too many derelict homes WORKING wide sidewalks on Cook crossing median on Cook Royal Athletic Park roads are two restrictive - increase capacity on Quadra and Cook streets need better retail environment on Quadra, Cook and Pandora intensified policing around Our Place I like the eclectic mix of architecture and uses. Gives it the feel of a small town. Need better sidewalks and bike ways. Some residential streets, like Balmoral, are too wide and need skinnying like Caledonia east of Cook. Community garden somewhere would be nice. Missing: bikeracks, trees, public washroom (or working waterfountain) Working: playpark, comunity, foodtruck Working - islands, crosswalks, Not working - sidewalks, public spaces, traffic bicyclists ignore traffic rules make churches more user friendly pocket library? maybe at crystal pool? get rid of marijuana store/pawnbroker i like gardens around St. John more trees Missing: more trees/native plants; accessible basketball court; First Nations history/culture acknowledgement / Working: playground/tennis court; big cottonwood trees in the park next to Wellburn's; Crystal Pool -we need a crosswalk or over pass at Cook and North Park, in my opinion it's the heart of North Park, the south cross walk at the entrance to Castle is not enough. + Vancouver Street cycling route, Cook Street commercial businesses, affordability - illegal parking of cars in residential spaces which are using the recreation facilities in area , litter along Caledonia and Vancouver from recreation facility users, Bike lanes, larger sidewalks, more greenery 14 NORTH PARK VILLAGE BRANDING SURVEY RESULTS August 20, 2015 I think Vancouver Street is working well as a bike thoroughfare. The parking lot across from Royal Athletic seems like a waste of space, i.e. is underutilized. Mentioned above, wider sidewalks would be good. Cook Street would definitely benefit from a bike lane. Some of the side streets don't have sidewalks. Sidewalks have poles and posts deep into walking spaces hindering strollers and wheelchairs. The parking along cook st. in the village section: poor visibility, hard to bike. Working: Family run businesses single family homes grassroot community activities Not working: not enough parking in the area night time safety - lighting drug issues/fighting on the street Not Working/Missing: - flashing crosswalk (see above) - shrubs, gardens, hanging baskets - crumbling, empty planters outside Polish Deli need to be removed by business owner - rotting window exterior & empty dirt planters outside Squash Club really make area look run-down - bikeracks - not enough of them so bikes always on poles Working: - outdoor seating at the Parsonage & Cold Comfort creates a welcoming, neighbourhood environment - Logan's great new look - lovely garden area outside Larsen's Music Store, welcoming deck/stairs at Larsen's School, attractive potted plants outside Island Orthotics Pedestrian crossings in the Village, stronger identification of Vancouver Street as a major bike Greenway (paint separated bike lane), beautification of the North Park Village and it's hang out spots North Park Village is a pedestrian nightmare needs more green space Signs for bike paths or greenway routes Bike lane on cook st Bike stands and benches more pedestrian paths, bike parking, public art Gardens, Cross walks, pedestrian pathways, Bike lanes. Not working: - Upkeep of certain personal residences and multi-family dwellings. - Consistency in the facade of buildings and businesses to create a cultural feeling. Missing: - Any sort of unique signage that identifies and distinguishes the area. Working: - Community gardens that are well maintained (not including home farms that spill onto sidewalks). - Mix of amenities (grocery, pharmacy, hardware). missing: safer north-south bike routes working: trees, gardens, outdoor fitness circuit I'd love to see more bike paths like the ones on Vancouver Street. More trees (especially nice big ones like Plain Trees and Garry Oaks) on streets and in parking lots (such as the RAP lot on Caledonia). Although there are trees surrounding many parking lots, it would be great to see a tree or two planted in the middle of the larger lots. It would also be great to see trees on Cook Street in front of Logan's and the WIN store. 15 NORTH PARK VILLAGE BRANDING SURVEY RESULTS August 20, 2015 Not working or missing - traffic calming; enough trees; development process that includes residents; garbage strewn around; solar powered clock tower. Working - green spaces; More bike friendly routes Cohesive landscaping for NP village Missing: proper pedestrian path through parking lot by Royal Athletic Park, trees in same parking lot. Good stuff: boulevard plantings like on Queens, free book stand on Queens poor sidewalks, no bikelanes, lack of back lanes Should be speed limits through a village and also on Caledonia Avenue where it has become a thorough fare. The city should commit to "beautification" of the village. St Andrews school proposed plan is a bad fit cycling infrastructure more greenspace needed Need more crosswalks on Cook St. bike routes, crosswalks same as question number 6 Not working: "heaving" sidewalks, heavy traffic on Cook St., City maintenance of boulevards Working: trees, boulevard gardens, Central Park/Crystal Pool QUESTION EIGHT What are the three most BEAUTIFUL SPOTS in North Park? And what your three favourite CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS? Franklin Green Park, Mrs Lee’s oak tree (1000 block Balmoral), NW corner of Balmoral and Vancouver, combining dwellings and businesses; concerts at St John the Divine, Gallery 1580 on Cook, Mason Street Farm The park around Crystal Pool, Caledonia Street, Todd’s garden Franklin green, mason street, central park, crystal pool Central park, parsonage, yokas Kona honey building, park, fernwood coffee/wildfire murals, leaven bakery, cold comfort, logan’s bar Mason and Chambers: great view of Olympians, Mt. Franklin Green is a great urban park that serves a lot of condo dwellers in the area and could be expanded or highlighted better. Central Park could be used a lot more regularly for big community events, and more outdoor seating areas and food truck parking in the village would bring a great vibe. I also love big events in RAP, it makes the neighbourhood buzz with excitement and vibrancy. Baseball games to music festivals, it's all great!
