Creative Application of CBT with Youth
This workshop is for clinicians who are new to CBT as well as those with more experience. We will discuss and
practice how to use a variety of creative methods and materials, including social media and technology, to enhance
therapeutic interventions thereby increasing both treatment engagement and outcome. Emphasis will be given on
working with anxiety disorders using exposure-based interventions.
Dr. Martinez is a registered psychologist at the Vancouver Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Centre and co-author of
the book, Your anxious mind: A teen’s guide to anxiety and panic (Magination Press, 2009). Dr. Martinez
specializes in cognitive-behavioral assessment and treatment of anxiety, mood, and childhood disorders, as well as
providing parent effectiveness training to parents. She is adept at working in a range of settings including the home
environment.
Sharon Selby, M.A., R.C.C.
Group Treatment with Anxious Children
This workshop provides an overview of Sharon’s anxiety group work, the dynamics that often occur, therapeutic
benefits, and the parent-education component that Sharon includes in her courses. Her groups cover psychoeducation about the anxiety and the brain, irrational vs. rational thoughts, perspective taking plus facing our fears
and steps to do this. The group also covers mindfulness and relaxation strategies for children.
Sharon Selby is a Registered Clinical Counsellor at the ABLE Developmental Clinic in West Vancouver. Having
spent thirteen years in the school setting as a school counsellor, she has a thorough understanding of school
systems. In addition to running seven-week, “Brain Science” classroom programs to teach children about Anxiety
and Anxiety Management Strategies, for the past three years she has also been running 14 groups per year at the
ABLE Clinic focusing on Self-Empowerment skills and Anxiety Management skills. Sharon combines her training in
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Art and Play Therapy, Mind-Up, and the F.R.I.E.N.D.S Anxiety program, when
creating the curriculum for her groups
Sarina Kot, Ph.D., R. Psych., RPT-S
Reaching Anxious Young Kids Through Play
In this workshop, a play-based approach to engage anxious young children will be presented. Through case
illustrations, participants will learn concrete tools to be used from the waiting room to the therapy room, to work with
young children and their parents. Useful toys and books will be presented so that you can add to your own tool box
for working with young children.
Dr. Sarina Kot is a registered psychologist and a registered play therapist-supervisor. She works at the Child
Protection Service Unit at BC Children’s Hospital. She also works at her private practice in Kerrisdale. Trained as a
play therapist, her clinical interest is in working with young children (pre-school age and early elementary age) to
help them with various issues ranging from anxiety to abuse, and many other challenges in between. She has
served on the Board of Directors for Cameray Child and Family Services for many years and is currently the
President of the Board.
Rosalind Catchpole, Ph.D., R. Psych.
Brave Talking for Selective Mutism

speech. Concrete tips and tools for working successfully with these children will be provided.
