This workshop is a fundraiser for Cameray Child and Family Services Presenter Biographies and Workshop Descriptions Katherine Martinez, Psy. D., R. Psych. Creative Application of CBT with Youth This workshop is for clinicians who are new to CBT as well as those with more experience. We will discuss and practice how to use a variety of creative methods and materials, including social media and technology, to enhance therapeutic interventions thereby increasing both treatment engagement and outcome. Emphasis will be given on working with anxiety disorders using exposure-based interventions. Dr. Martinez is a registered psychologist at the Vancouver Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Centre and co-author of the book, Your anxious mind: A teen’s guide to anxiety and panic (Magination Press, 2009). Dr. Martinez specializes in cognitive-behavioral assessment and treatment of anxiety, mood, and childhood disorders, as well as providing parent effectiveness training to parents. She is adept at working in a range of settings including the home environment. Sharon Selby, M.A., R.C.C. Group Treatment with Anxious Children This workshop provides an overview of Sharon’s anxiety group work, the dynamics that often occur, therapeutic benefits, and the parent-education component that Sharon includes in her courses. Her groups cover psychoeducation about the anxiety and the brain, irrational vs. rational thoughts, perspective taking plus facing our fears and steps to do this. The group also covers mindfulness and relaxation strategies for children. Sharon Selby is a Registered Clinical Counsellor at the ABLE Developmental Clinic in West Vancouver. Having spent thirteen years in the school setting as a school counsellor, she has a thorough understanding of school systems. In addition to running seven-week, “Brain Science” classroom programs to teach children about Anxiety and Anxiety Management Strategies, for the past three years she has also been running 14 groups per year at the ABLE Clinic focusing on Self-Empowerment skills and Anxiety Management skills. Sharon combines her training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Art and Play Therapy, Mind-Up, and the F.R.I.E.N.D.S Anxiety program, when creating the curriculum for her groups Sarina Kot, Ph.D., R. Psych., RPT-S Reaching Anxious Young Kids Through Play In this workshop, a play-based approach to engage anxious young children will be presented. Through case illustrations, participants will learn concrete tools to be used from the waiting room to the therapy room, to work with young children and their parents. Useful toys and books will be presented so that you can add to your own tool box for working with young children. Dr. Sarina Kot is a registered psychologist and a registered play therapist-supervisor. She works at the Child Protection Service Unit at BC Children’s Hospital. She also works at her private practice in Kerrisdale. Trained as a play therapist, her clinical interest is in working with young children (pre-school age and early elementary age) to help them with various issues ranging from anxiety to abuse, and many other challenges in between. She has served on the Board of Directors for Cameray Child and Family Services for many years and is currently the President of the Board. Rosalind Catchpole, Ph.D., R. Psych. Brave Talking for Selective Mutism This workshop will cover the most current conceptualization and treatment research in selective mutism. Participants will learn the behavioural model of selective mutism and how this model can be used to encourage speech. Concrete tips and tools for working successfully with these children will be provided. Dr. Rosalind Catchpole is a registered psychologist in the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Clinic at BC Children’s Hospital. Additionally, she holds a research position in the Provincial Youth Concurrent Disorders Program at BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services and is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at UBC. She also works with CBT Connections, a company that provides training and supervision in evidence-based practice for childhood anxiety and has a small private practice.
