KAD T-Shirt Weaving Handicraft Project Has Created 55 Jobs for Unemployed Youths in Samraong Tong District, Kampong Speu Province In March 2012, KAD has received the funding from Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to Cambodia to support the KAD’s new T-Shirt Weaving Handicraft Project in Kampong Speu province. Currently, KAD has established and operated this project in Trakiet village, Trapaing Kong commune, Samraong Tong district, Kampong Speu province in which 55 youths from various villages have been chosen to participate. The participants were trained for two months on how to use weaving machines and to do the weaving. After two-month training, they were employed and started to produce T-shirts. Monthly wage paid to them depending upon the amount of T-shirt production. The project objective is to contribution to income-generating employment opportunity for unemployed youths living in the rural areas of Kampong Speu province through the provision of T-shirt weaving skill training. The expected outputs and outcome of the project are (1) 55 youths acquire T-shirt weaving skills, (2) 55 youths are employed and reap monthly wages from employment and (3) increased income to improve family livelihood of those (55 youths) who are involved in the project. The project hopes to have some impacts for example, (1) prevention of migration in search of employment out of villages, (2) elimination of the uses of narcotic drugs and community violence among the youths, (3) elimination of fear and concern of community people affected by behaviors of community youths, (4) the communities have enough money for expanding existing small-scale or creating new, small-scale trade and for taking care of their health, (5) preventing themselves from being in debt, (6) their own property is not confiscated due to debt. Mr. Siphann, Project Manager in charge of Kampong Speu Support Area Unit said that this project is good because it has helped create the job for those youths to get income to support their families and lead to eradication of domestic violence. Mr. Doem Sam Orn, the section chief of the project said “I think this project is very good because it has brought about employment in villages for unemployed youths that has prevented illegal migration in search of the jobs overseas especially in Thailand I notice that they were barbarously bullied and had no money left at all”. Mr. Vuth Thach living in Trakiet village who works as a T-shirt weaving staff said that he was very happy to have a T-shirt weaving handicraft center that has provided him with work. He added that when he got monthly wage, he would give 70% of it to his mother and another 30% would go to his aunt because he now lives with her. But for himself, he said that he had no need because he didn’t know what to be spent on. Mr. Pen Tola living in Thmar Bang village said “Before I worked here, I was unemployed, I stayed home and helped my parents with housework, rice growing and animal tending. It is very easy for me to work here, especially it is near my house that facilitate my travel. It is ok even if I walk or ride a bicycle. My plan is that when I gain monthly wage from weaving I will support myself, especially I will use it for continuing my study at the university and provide my parents with small proportion of it”. Mr. Chuon Pov living in Dok Por villag said that before coming to work for T-shirt weaving handicraft center, during dry season he was sometimes hired to erect wedding shelter and organize wedding food and during rainy season he helped his parents with rice growing. He added that he was very glad to work here because it is near his village that is easy for his travel and he could save a lot of money. He would not abandon this job. When getting monthly wage, he would give 90% of it to his mother so that she uses it for agricultural work such as purchasing of chemical fertilizer, rice seeds, etc. Some of those youths had a young gangster background who used to use narcotic drugs and to fight each other during any ceremony party dances at night time but now they have become good friends. So this project has been involved in presenting community safety and security in keeping with the Safety Commune, Village Program of the Royal Government of Cambodia.
