The role of Sector Capability:
We develop a system of capable and connected people and organisations that can deliver world
leading sporting outcomes. We work with partners important to delivering winning outcomes for
High Performance Sport NZ (HPSNZ) and participation outcomes for Community Sport (CS). We also
work directly into building a world leading system through contributing to the system attributes of:
connectivity (Relationship Management, Events, Facilities), Capability (Business Improvement,
Events, Facilities), Intelligence (Events, Facilities, Relationship Management), and Resources
(Business Improvement, Events).
Specifically, we exist to:




Increase connectivity and alignment in the sport system  by fostering and creating
strategic relationships.
Ensure there is effective delivery of sport opportunities  by building the capability of
sport related organisations and their leaders.
Improve facilities utilisation and return on investment  by coordinating a network of
appropriate spaces and places across all New Zealand.
Ensure best possible financial, participation and social returns from events  by
supporting sporting events of all sizes across New Zealand.
The role of the Business Improvement team
We have business improvement experts who help build the capability of Sport NZ partners and
sector leaders (across governance, planning, HR, leadership, finance, commercial and technology).
We also deliver large scale projects for the entire sport system that improve capability and reduce
costs.
Job Purpose
The role of the Senior Advisor – People Capability is to work externally with our sport organisation
partners and the wider sport and recreation sector to lead and implement people capability and
leadership initiatives. This role collaborates closely with other Business Improvement experts and
colleagues across both Sport NZ Group operating arms - Community Sport and High Performance.
Accountabilities:
The main accountabilities of this role are in four areas:
1) One on one partner improvement projects and support
•
Assess and implement general HR improvement projects for our partner organisations; and
support partners to ensure access to good HR practices, processes and systems to effectively
understand and manage staff engagement.
•
Assist partners to create an organisational structure that is appropriate to deliver their
strategic objectives.
•
Support partners with Executive and Board recruitment processes.
•
Provide partners with remuneration advice and assistance
•
Provide responsive support to partners on critical HR issues as they arise.
2) Transformation projects
•
Assist partners through significant organisational change and restructures.
3) All of sector projects
•
Contribute to the design and implementation of strategic workforce projects across the sport
sector, working closely with other Sport NZ, HPSNZ and key partners’ staff.
•
Deliver expert programmes and advice to improve the leadership capability of senior leaders
in the sport sector.
4) Developing resources and tools
•
Develop (or source) and maintain resources and tools that can be used by Partners and the
sport sector. E.g. CEO on-boarding, legal help-line, health & safety, people management
frameworks, tools and templates.
Experience/skills:
Required
•
Experience in HR leadership in a relevant sector, including provision of external HR services
with a proven track record of excellent results.
•
Excellent understanding of human resource management and learning and development
disciplines.
•
Experience leading teams and influencing and leading change.
•
Proven experience building and maintaining effective relationships with senior leaders and
boards
•
Proven experience leading large scale projects to successful outcomes.
•
Strong networking skills and the ability to work across very different organisations.
•
A high level of verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate and
present clearly to a wide range of audiences in a variety of situations.
•
Experience in influencing attitudes, behaviors and processes.
•
Strong judgment and decision-making skills.
•
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
•
Excellent Microsoft Office skills and confidence working with systems and modelling tools.
Desirable
• Experience in or working with sport sector or not for profit organisations.
Knowledge:
Required
•
Knowledge of Sport NZ’s role and responsibilities as a Crown Agent and an awareness of the
wider social and political context in which Sport NZ operates.
•
Knowledge of project and programme management and demonstrating impact.
Desirable
•
Knowledge of sport system organisations (NSOs, RSTs, Government and private sector).
•
Knowledge of, and commitment to, the Treaty of Waitangi.
•
An understanding of the dynamics of the NZ sport sector.
•
Relevant tertiary qualification.
•
Knowledge of workforce planning and leadership.
