JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE
Reference & Instruction/Instructional Technologies Librarian
REPORTS TO:
Head of Reference & Instruction
PRIMARY FUNCTION: The R&I/IT Librarian teaches in the library’s program of courseintegrated research instruction and champions relevant current and emerging instructional technologies.
As a liaison librarian, supports faculty and students in the social sciences and other disciplines as
needed. Provides reference service and guides library users in identifying, retrieving, and evaluating
information in all formats.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
1. Develop and teach sessions (25 per semester on average) on research for St. Olaf courses in the
social sciences and other areas as needed. Work closely with the social sciences faculty to deliver
optimal research instruction in the social sciences disciplines.
2. Assist St. Olaf community and the general public with research at the reference desk, over the
phone, by e-mail, and in personal meetings. Evening and weekend hours are required.
3. Collaborate with educational technology specialists in the application of technologies in
instructional and research activities.
4. Provide leadership in the area of instructional technologies through educational activities such as
iPad/E-text learning communities, summer institutes, and other outreach endeavors.
5. Develop, maintain, and promote knowledge of research trends, emerging instructional
technologies, and scholarly communication.
6. Serve as the collection development liaison to specified departments, working with faculty to
develop and maintain the general collection and the reference collection.
7. As a member of the Bridge Consortium the R&I/IT librarian will work collaboratively and in
tandem with peers at Carleton College participating in all appropriate Bridge working groups,
meetings and functions, in order to provide excellent access to joint library resources, and to
ensure that work is not duplicated and that costs are contained or reduced. Additionally, the
R&I/IT librarian may be asked to provide services to Carleton College as part of the duties of
this position.
8. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned, depending upon additional expertise,
interests, and the needs of the libraries.

EDUCATION:
EXPERIENCE:
Essential:
M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited institution or foreign
equivalent.
Desirable:
Additional graduate degrees.
Academic background in the social sciences.
Desirable:

Experience in an academic library or research institution with a
focus on teaching and reference services.

Experience in application of instructional technologies, such as
mobile technology (including iPads), course-management
systems, video and audio editing, elements of GIS and
mapping, and other applications to support Digital Humanities,
teaching, and research.

Teaching experience in a social sciences discipline.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:








Demonstrated knowledge of technology trends, standards, and issues in academic libraries and
higher education.
Excellent teaching skills.
Excellent research skills, with an ability to find information in a wide variety of locations and
formats.
Familiarity with instructional technology, such as such as mobile technology, coursemanagement systems, video and audio editing, GIS and mapping.
Ability to work as a team member, contributing to both the work of the reference/instruction
department as well as the general work of the libraries.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work one-on-one and in the classroom with college students, professors, and the
general public.
Must understand the nature and philosophy of a liberal arts college.
