1.JOHN JACOB RICHARDS
John Jacob Richards was born John Jacob Reichart about 1715 in
Germany. He is probably the Jacob Richards who came to Philadelphia, Pa
on the ship "Patience" from Rotterdam, Holland,on September 19,1749 by
way of Cowes, England and settled in Pendleton County,VA. He was listed
as Richart on the ship passenger list.
Jacob Richards was listed in an appraisement in Augusta County, VA,
Volume 3,Page 40, December 5,1754.
Jacob and John Richards are listed in Volume 1,Page 87,Nov 19,1760
on a list of tithable of Harrison County VA.
Jacob was granted 400 acres by the Commissioners of Unpatented Lands to
include his settlement of 1771.
Jacob and his relatives built Fort Richards on the west bank of the
West Fork River near the mouth of Sycamore Creek in present day Union
District of Harrison County, WV. Many pioneer families of the West Fork
Valley found refuge from the barbarian warfare in this fort. The site of
Richards' fort is marked by a spring which was inside of the palisade
the spring is now called Fort Spring. A Monument was erected in 1932 by
the County of Harrison to designate the Location of fort.
Lands granted to Jacob and his relatives include: Arnold-300
acres-1773, Paul-400 acres-1773, Isaac-400 acres-Elk Creek, Jacob-400
acres-Sycamore Creek-1771, Henry-400 acres-Cheat River-1776, William-400
acres-Lost Creek, and Conrad Richards-in Lost Creek-1774. These were the
builders and defenders of this Richards fort.
Jacob's spouse is unknown. He is reported to have married an Indian,
but this in doubtful, since Indians or part Indians were not allowed to
own land in the 1700 and early 1800's.

guardian.

George Washington Richards a son of John Jacob Richards, was born
in Rockingham County VA in 1759 and died in Lewis County VA (WV) in
1835. He married Catherine Bush in Harrison County VA (WV) January 30,
1788. Catherine, a daughter of John and Mary (Hacker) Bush, was born in
Hardy County Va in 1772 and died in Lewis County VA in 1814.
The following is a transcription of the proceedings of Lewis County
VA County in 1733 in processing George's application for a pension as a
veteran of the American Revolution.
State of Virginia, Lewis County Courthouse
Personally appeared before me the subscriber a Justice of the Peace in
and for the Said County of Lewis on this 23 day of Sept 1833 George
Richards a resident of the County of Lewis and State of Virginia and
{74?} years who being first duly Sworn according to Law doth on his oath
make the following decleration in order to obtain the benefit of the
act of Congress passed June 7,1832.
That he entered the Service of the United States under the following
named officers and Served as here in Stated. That in the year 1780 on
the 2 day of March in the county of Monongalia and the State of Virginia
he volunteered for nine months as an indian Spy and was plased under the
Command of Capt Joseph Gregory. Ensign John Tommis? other officers
names not recollected and was Stationed at Powers Fort on Simpsons Creek
in the county and State aforesaid.
Captain Gregory commanded a Company of Indian Spys and affiant was
engaged in Spying the County from Said fort to the River Ohio over this
tower.
The indians come in to the country and killed a man by the name of
Phillip Davy and stoled horse belonging William Rogers - affiant served
out the tower for which he Volunteered during which time he acted as
orderly Sargeant to which office he was promoted when he first entered
the Service as an indian Spy - under the Command of Captain Gregory,
affiant was discharged some time in the month of december by his Said
Captain Gregory in the year 1780 having Service nine months as an indian
Spy as an orderly Sergant- again in the year of 1781 in March the 8th in
the County of " Monongalia" and the State of Virginia affiant
Volunteered and was plased under the Command of the Same officers as in
his first tower to wit Captain Josep Gregory, Ensign John Tommis
affiant was again promoted to the office of - Orderly Sargeant and was
Stationed at Powers Fort of Simpsons Creek in the County and State
aforesaid and was engaged as aforesaid in Spying and watching the
enemy{?}prevent there commiting depredations on the then thin Settled
country of North Western Virginia affiant was engaged in the above named
Service untill some time in the month of November 1781.
At which time affiant was discharged by his Said Captain Joseph Gregory
having Served nine months as an Indian Spy during which time affiant
acted in the capasity of an Order Sargeant and performed all the dutys
belonging to said office again in the year 1782 in the month of April he
think the 8th day as volunteer in the County of Monongalia and State of
Virginia and was marched from Simpsons Creek to Arnolds Fort on the west
fork River in the county and State aforesaid affiant was marched under
the command of Ensign John Tommis from Simpsons Creek to Arnolds and
when he arrived there he was plased under the Command of Capt William
Lowther, George Jackson, Lieutenant John Tommis, Ensign, the distance
from Simpsons Creek to Arnolds affiant thinks is about 18 miles the
country from one fort to another was a wilderness affiant was engaged
during this tower of Service as in his first and Second under the
command of Capt Josep Gregory in Spying the country from "Said fort to
the river Ohio over the Same Country as mentioned in his first and
Second tower under the Command of Captain Joseph Gregory during his
tower as in affiants first and Second he was an Orderly Sargeant and
Continued to act and performed the dutys belonging Said office until
some time in the month of November 1782 at which time the affiant was
discharged by his Said Captain William Lowther having Served Eight
months as an "Indian Spy" in the active capasity of an orderly Sargeant
the following are the occurences which took place during affiants
Several towers of Service in his first Vary little took place of which
affiant hase any distinct recollection - during his 2nd- tower under
Captain Gregory the indians come into the neighbourhood of Simpsons and
killed Capaint John Tommis, his wife and Two of his children and took
one p{?} during his third tower the indians come into the neighbourhood
of Arnolds fort, on the west fork river when affiant was Stationed a nd
killed {Paul/Dave?} and Arnold Richards.
To the Several interogatories prescribed by the War Department the
Justice proseded to pronounce to which affiant answers as follows to
the first he answers and says,so.
1. I was Borned in the County of Rockingham, State of Virginia in the
year 1759.
2. I have no Record of my age.
I have the recollection of my parents who informed me the year I was
Borned in3. When called in to Service I was living in the County of Monongalia
State of Virginia.
I have never lived out of the State of Virginia since the Revolutionary
War.
I have lived in the County of Harrison and the County of Wood and Lewis
County where I now reside in the State of Virginia.
4. All my towers of Service I volunteered
5. during my first tower I became acquainted with Capt Booth who
commanded a company of indian Spys as I was informed.
I also become acquainted with Colonel Benjamin Wilson and Capt Trimble
who came from Augusta County my servis being that of an indian Spy and
confined to the north western part of Virginia I never had an
opportunity to become acquainted with any of regular officers.
I was regularly discharged by my {?} Captain - under whom I served but
they are lost or mislayed/ I have no documentary evidence of my service
and know of no one by whom I can prove my Service but are known to and
acquainted with William L Mitchell and John Cain who can testify to my
character my age- to their beliefs of my having bin a "Soldier of the
Revolutionary War"
I hereby relinquish every claim what ever to a pention or anuity
except the presant and declares that his name is not on the pention
Roll of the agency of any State.

We, William L Mitchell and John Cain residing in the County of Lewis and
State of Virginia - hereby certify that we are acquainted with George
Richards who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration that we
believe him to be 74 years years of age that he is reputed and believed
in the neighbourhood where he resides to have bin a Soldier of the
Revolution and that we concede in that opinion.

And I the Said Justice of the peace as hereby declare my opinion
after the investigation of the matter and after putting the
interogatories prescribed by thewar department that the above named
applicant was a Revolutionary Soldier and served as he States and I the
Said Justice further certify that it appears to me that William L.
Mitchell and John Cain who have signed the preseding certificate are
credible persons and that there statement is entitled to credit and I
the Said Justice further certify that there is no Clergiman residing in
the neighbourhood of the above named applicant and that he from "Boddily
infirmity" is unable to travel to the Court hous of the Said County of
Lewis from which he lives forty miles and I the Said Justice further
certify that the foregoing contains the original prosedings of myself in
the matter of the application of George Richards for a pention in
testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 23 day of
September 1833

George was granted Pension # S18572 Virginia No. 16934 at the rate of
$80 per year beginning March 4, 1831. A certificate of pension was
issued October 16, 1933, with $240 arrears payment to September 4, 1833.
George was granted 400 acres on Limestone Creek, to include his
settlement made in 1775. He later assigned this land to James Neal.
George Richards moved his family from Harrison County, VA to Lynn Camp
Run in that part of Wood County VA that is now Ritchie County WV about
1800.

Magdalena Richards, a daughter of John and Sarah (Ellsworth)
Richards, was born in Hardy County VA October 7, 1768 and died in Lewis
County VA June 11, 1832. She married Michael Stump in Harrison County VA
February, 10 1786. Michael, a son of Michael II and Sarah (Hughes)
Stump, was born in what is now Hardy County WV February 4, 1766 and died
in Lewis (now Gilmer) County VA (WV) March 27, 1834. He came to
Harrison County VA (WV) with his uncle, Jesse Hughes and bought property
on Hacker's Creek in 1786.
Soon after their marriage, Indian hostilities were renewed and
Michael and his bride removed to his old home in Hardy County. They
remained in Hardy County a number of years, for Michael IV could clearly
remember his grandfather, Michael II.
The family moved to Steer Creek in what is now Gilmer County WV May
6, 1804. In all Gilmer County records, Michael III is listed as
"Michael Stump Sr.". At the time Michael moved to Steer Creek, it was
part of Harrison County VA. In 1816, Lewis County was formed and
included the Stump homestead. The area is now located in Gilmer County,
WV.
Michael served as Sheriff of Lewis County VA for six years and was
appointed county surveyor of Gilmer County VA (WV) when that County was
formed from Lewis County in 1845. He was granted several parcels of
land in Harrison County, comprising thousands of acres.
For more than seventy five years, Michael's final resting place was
marked by a plain flat sandstone. A great grandson, Dr. Leland J.
Stump, began a campaign amongst Michael's descendants to erect a fitting
monument. Each descendant was asked to contribute a dime. On May 30,
1912, the largest crowd yet assembled in Gilmer County witnessed the
unveiling of a huge stone carved in the shape of a tree trunk with
crossed axes at the top as symbols of the pioneer.

Susannah Richards, a daughter of Paul Richards, was born about 1778
and died in Harrison County VA before 1840. She married a widower,
Johannes "John" Waggoner, in Harrison County VA February 19, 1798.
Susannah was not mentioned in John's will, which was dated 1840. She was
a ward of John Runyon when she was married. The following is a land
grant to Susannah and her sister, Mary (Richards) King.
" Mary King and Susanna Waggoner, 207 Acres, Monongalia (County) and
delivered to Mr. Priestly 19 Jany 1802
James Monroe Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia To
all To whom these presents shall come Greeting Know ye that by virtue of
a Certificate in right of Settlement given by the commissioners for
adjusting the Titles to impatented lands in the District of Monongalia
Yohogania and Ohio & in Consideration of the composition of four dollars
and forty four Cents paid into the Treasury of this Commonwealth There
is Granted by the said Commonwealth unto Mary King late Mary Richards
and Susanna Waggoner late Susanna Richards surviving heirs of Paul
Richards Dec'd a Certain tract or parcel of Land Containing Two hundred
and seven acres by survey bearing date of the tenth day of March
seventeen hundred & eighty three lying and being in the County of
Monongalia on the west forks of the Monongalia River adjoining lands
claimed by Arnold Richards including said Paul Richard's settlement made
in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy four and bounded as
followeth to wit Beginning at a beach and white oaks on the river bank
and running thence north three degree west eighty four poles to a white
oak east four and a half poles to a sourwood north six degrees east one
hundred and thirty two poles to a hickory north eighty three and a half
degrees west sixty poles to a white oak south sixty four degrees west
sixty six poles to a white oak south fourth eight degrees west eighty
poles crossing a branch south one hundred and thirty four poles crossing
the drain to a black oak on the river thence down the river south eighty
eight egrees est one hundred and sixty three poles to the beginning,
with it Appurtenances to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of
land with it appurtenances to the said Mary King and Susanna Waggoner
and their heirs forever,

Commonwealth of Virginia, hath hereunto set his hand and Caused the
lesser seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Richmond on the
seventeenth day of December in the year of our lord one thousand
eight hundred and one, and of the Commonweath the Twenty Sixth."
James Monroe
John Waggoner, a son of Wilhelm and Agnesa Waggoner, was born in
Philadelphia County PA November 24, 1751 and died in Lewis County VA
about 1842, when his will was probated in that county. He married
Margaret Bonnett in Hampshire County VA in 1778. Margaret, a daughter of
Samuel and Mary Elizabeth (Lorentz) Bonnett, was born about 1759 and was
killed by marauding Indians led by Tecumseh in present day Preston
County WV May 7, 1792.
When the Indians raided the Waggoner cabin, John was working in a
field. Tecumseh fired at him but missed. John was unarmed and ran to his
cabin for a gun, but saw Indians in possession and ran to a neighbor's
for help. The Indians killed one child at the cabin and carried off
Margaret, 13 year old Elizabeth, 12 year old Mary, six year old Peter
and three unidentified children. Margaret and the three unidentified
children were killed about a mile from the cabin and Elizabeth, Mary and
Peter carried beyond the Ohio River.
John Appeared in Lewis County VA Court August 7, 1832 to be
examined regarding his service in the American Revolution. He stated
that he was first drafted in 1778 to serve under Major Carroll VAn Meter
and Captain John Harness to join an expedition to Ohio to build Fort
Lawrens. He served a tour of 6 months and 15 days and was discharged by
Orderly Sergeant Joseph Mall at McIntosh's Fort.
In 1780, he was drafted to serve under Colonel Charles Martin and
Captain Owen Cavey for a six months's tour of duty on the Monongahela
River. He was discharged by Captain Davey in 1781. He was drafted in
1781 to served under Colonel Lewis and Captain Neal and was at Yorktown,
VA when Cornwallis surrendered. He then guarded prisoners taken at
Yorktown. He returned home after a tour of nine months in the fall of
1782.

Harrison County VA in an Indian attack August 6, 1782. Mary was bound in

Mary married Job Stout May 25, 1799 in Harrison County. Job, a son

Richards, was born August 14, 1842 in Wood County VA and died February
18, 1933 in Nicholas County WV. He married Elizabeth Nancy "Bet" Collins
in Calhoun County June 18, 1865. Elizabeth, a daughter of James Hezekiah
and Roanna (Maze) Collins, was born about 1840 and died in Calhoun
County February 14, 1923.
Adonijah served the Union in the Civil War and his discharge
follows:
"ADONIJAH RICHARDS
To all whom it may Concern Know Ye That Adonijah Richards a private of
Captain Jacob Clammers Company C. Eleventh Regiment of West Virginia
Infantry Volunteers who enrolled on the Tenth day of November one
Thousand Eight hundred and Sixty one to serve Three years or during the
war is hereby Discharged from the Service of the United States This
Twenty fourth Day of December 1864 at Cumberland Md. by reason of
expiration of Term of Service. No obgection to his being reenlisted is
known to exist.
Said Adonijah Richards was born in Ritchie County in the State of
Virginia is Twenty three years of age Five feet Eleven inches high Fair
Complexion Black eyes Brown hair and by ocupation when enrolled a
Farmer.
Given at Cumberland Md. this Twenty Fourth Day of December 1864.
