Procedures/Activities
Introduction/Anticipatory Set/Engagement and Exploration: (< 5 min)
“Over the past few weeks we have been working on nouns which are persons, places,
or things. Now that we know a little bit about verbs and how they are action words,
we are going to use your favorite books and our iPad’s to identify these different
categories of words! We will be able to share our work not only with each other but
with our families as well!”
Model: (<5 min)
I will be showing them the example book as I am explaining directions. “I expect
everyone to pay attention to the example I am going to share with you so that you can
head to your book nook and start working.
First you are going to find a book that you really like, mine is “If You Give a Mouse a
Cookie” by Laure Jofee Numeroff.
You are going to get your iPad’s and open up the “StoryKit” app.
Next, select New Book. The icon on the bottom left corner is a camera with a plus
sign on it, select it and take a picture of your first page.
After your first page is up you are going to use different tools to highlight or identify
verbs and nouns.
I want verbs as one color or shape and nouns as another color or shape.
After you have done the first page, select add new page and do the next page of your
book and do the same thing to identify and color the words. Do this for the entire
story and at the last page please indicate your colors.

Guided Practice/Exploration:
The model is a very long process and will be a little confusing, so for the guided
practice I will use one of the model books the application already has. For example,
“The Three Pigs.” I will go through this process again as stated before and color code
the verbs and nouns and have them do it along with me on their own iPad’s.
Check for Understanding/Explanation:
“Before you go back to your book nooks and start working on this, I want someone to
tell me what the first 3 steps of this project.” Answer: Finding a favorite book. Get
your iPad. Open up StoryKit app.
“Someone else tell me what you are going to do when the app is opened.” Answer:
Select new book and take a picture of the first page by selecting the photo plus sign
on the bottom left. Use different tools to color code or shape verbs and nouns. At the
end make a key for the different shapes or colors.
“Perfect! Now I want someone to tell me what they think is the point of doing this.”
Answer: (something along the idea of…) to realize verbs and nouns are found in
almost every single book and to be able to identify the difference between the words.
Independent Practice/Elaboration:
Once the students are back at their book nooks, go around to each and make sure
they have a book selected out and understand the directions. Ask each student to
identify the difference between a noun and a verb.
Closure/Evaluation: Every day I hope to have (4 if a class of 20 students) share what
they did for reader’s workshop by presenting. So for this particular lesson the 4 of
them would plug in their iPad’s and point out the verbs and nouns they found in their
books. Everyone that day would go home and share and re-read their stories to their
parents and homework would be to use a different book and do the same thing!
Planned Modifications and Differentiation: If the student is still unsure what verbs
and nouns are I would pair them up with a student that does understand the difference. If
they are a student that has trouble with reading then I would allow them to use a lower
level book to identify the words.
Assessment of Student Learning: I will use the student product at the end of the lesson
as an assessment. I expect that they do this really well because it will be a review of both
verbs and nouns. I hope afterwards to have this as an ongoing project so that they can add
adverbs and pronouns to the color coding and shaping.
Data Collection and Analysis: The student’s would share their products with me by email and save them on their iPad’s. I would check their books to make sure they are
understand nouns and verbs and would give feedback to each child.

Post-Lesson Reflection: I haven’t actually taught this lesson so I am not sure how each
section would play out. Ideally, they would all work out and the student’s would
understand the concept and have fun with it as well.
