Course description: A close reading of the De Anima in Greek, which provides a comprehensive, non-dualistic philosophy of biology and philosophy of psychology. These works are the starting point for exploring alternatives to Cartesianism and its philosophical progeny. Course plan Each meeting will be devoted to a chapter of De Anima. You will responsible for studying the whole chapter in advance and understanding it. One student will prepare a presentation on a particular passage (typically a paragraph). The presentation should include: (i) a “divisio”; (ii) a translation; (iii) discussion of points of textual criticism, grammar, and philology; (iv) discussion of historical, conceptual, or philosophical issues. For the first week please read the entire De Anima through in translation.
