Climate Controls and Biomes Project
Integrated Science 1
Name:
Pd.
As we have learned, climate is a mix of many different factors such as temperature, precipitation, cloud
cover, etc. There are also six specific factors that control the climate of a particular area (LETWAV).
Based on these climates, different populations of plants and animals can be found in different regions all
around the globe. These regions are referred to as biomes.
For this project, you will be assigned a particular climate zone, you will research that zone, and you will
research the different biomes that are found within that zone.
Focus Questions:
1. What are the nine different climate zones that can be found within the United States?
2. What are the six different climate controls that determine the climate of a particular area?
3. What are the different biomes that can be found in the United States and what types of plants
and animals can be found in those biomes?
Project:
Using the guidelines below, create a poster that includes all of the items mentioned. You should
use your textbook (304-305 for climate zones and 218-225 for biomes), a computer, your personal device,
and an atlas to find your information. You will have several class periods to complete your poster and it
must be ready for display Friday, December 12.
Poster Components:
My assigned Climate Region: _____________________________
 Research your climate region. What are the climatic characteristics of your region (average
temperature, temperature ranges, precipitation, etc…use your climate control notes to help you).
 On a world map (provided), shade your climate region (shade your region for the entire world)
 On the same map used above, mark and name two US cities that have your assigned climate.
 List at least two specific climate controls (LETWAV) that have created your climate. Describe
specifically why and how they have contributed to YOUR climate.
 On your first world map, find and mark two major cities outside the US that also experience your
climate.
 Name and briefly describe (abiotic factors only) two biomes that fall within your climate region.
 Draw a sample climatogram for your climate region (label all axes…see page 218 for a sample
climatogram).
 List three plants and three animals for each biome that typify that biome.
 On a second world map (provided), shade your biomes (shade your biomes for the entire world
and use a different color for each biome).
Requirements:
 All of the above components must be present on your poster
 All images and type must be done by hand…no printed images or printed type
 You must write/draw clearly so that your classmates can use your poster to answer questions about
your climate and biomes
 All posters must be completed by the end of the period on December 11.
Climate Regions:
Tropical Wet and Dry
Dry Summer Subtropical
Humid Subtropical
Marine West Coast
