Sunday Stroll, Option One - Mink Brook Nature
Preserve Trails
Sunday, July 24, 1 – 3pm
UVLT Office, 19 Buck Road, Hanover, NH (map)
The hike, led by Patchen Miller intern Ally Bernstein,
will leave from the Upper Valley Land Trust parking lot to
start on the Wheelock Trail. This trail, with a short road
walk, will connect to the Quinn Trail then cross the brook
to rejoin the Wheelock Trail. The distance will be about
2.3 miles round trip, with an option to extend a few
tenths of a mile on the Forest Loop. It is a delightful walk
in the quiet of a mostly mature forest, through rocks and
huge boulders and alongside a tumbling brook. There is little elevation change and
the footing is generally good. A trail map may be found on theUVLT website.
Questions? Contact Ally at uvlt.intern1@uvlt.org or 603-643-6626 x121.
Sunday Stroll, Option Two - Piermont Mountain
Sunday, July 24, 1 – 4:30pm
Kingswood Camp, Piermont, NH
This hike will be a fun adventure and perhaps a bit of a challenge over a newly laid
out and still rough trail on the North side of Piermont Mountain. The vertical
incline is about 1400 feet and the distance is about 4 miles round trip, therefore,
the hike will likely take a bit longer than 2 hours. From the top there is a great view
towards Mount Moosilauke. The hike will be led by Roger Hanlon, a UVLT trustee,
who is quite excited about hiking a new trail on a little known mountain! Meet
along Route 25c near the Kingswood Camp baseball field (across the road from
Lake Tarleton).
For more information, please contact Roger at jrhanlon@daypitney.com or (802)

New Website Celebrates Land; People
The Upper Valley Land Trust (UVLT) in
conjunction with web developer, Monique
Priestley has created a new website, Upper
Valley Story-Scape (UVSS). The site aims to
enable Upper Valley residents and visitors to
share stories, images, videos and audio about
favorite Upper Valley places. This website is the
latest in our efforts to document and celebrate
the region; its land and its people.
The new website, www.uvstoryscape.org, is based on a similar site called, Voices
for the Lake (www.voicesforthelake.org) that was created by the ECHO Lake
Aquarium & Science Center in Burlington. The difference between the two sites is
fairly simple, Voices for the Lake is an online forum for sharing images, videos,
audio and written stories about Lake Champlain and the surrounding area. Upper
Valley Story-Scape is structured similarly as a place to share the same type of
content, but about the living things and landforms of the Upper Valley region.

Hypertherm and UVLT Team-Up
in July for Industrial Strength Invasive
Removal
It is 7:30am sharp on Friday July 15th and the
back parking lot of a nondescript building
along Route 5 in Norwich is full of vehicles,
people, and laughter. The associates of
Hypertherm, a Hanover, NH based
manufacturer, have arrived to begin their
volunteer day with the Upper Valley Land Trust.
The company gives their employees 16 hours of paid time each year to participate
in local community service activities. These days fit in with Hypertherm’s
commitment and mission to support environmental stewardship and community
engagement.
Today, 19 employees gather around UVLT Stewardship Director, Pete Helm, as he
gives a brief lesson on invasive species...

UVLT Welcomes New Programs
Coordinator, Anna Slack!
Kinship with the natural world has motivated Anna
since she was a young girl growing up in central
Vermont. Until she left New England to attend
college, Anna didn’t realize the scope of the
detachment between people and their environment.
After college, Anna found herself drawn to helping
people find that link between themselves and their
surroundings. As a forestry intern on an Arizona
Apache Indian Reservation Anna saw a lack of
interest and ownership that compelled her to create an educational workshop for
tribal members to re-forge that connection.
Anna’s commitment to linkages between land and people has brought her to the
Programs Coordinator position here at UVLT. Anna hopes UVLT’s events and
activities will continue to bring people together to discover and re-discover the joy
that a personal connection to the lands of the Upper Valley can bring!
Anna can be reached at anna.slack@uvlt.org or (603) 643-6626 ext.102. Please
feel free to be in touch with her regarding UVLT events and activities; she looks
forward to hearing from you!
