Dear Parent,

It is the goal of the San Gabriel Unified School District (SGUSD) to place students in appropriate class levels and ensure students graduate from high school college and career ready. The Common Core State Standards

(CCSS) are an outstanding vehicle that will enable all students to reach that goal. As we transition into the

Common Core State Standards, there will be some changes in courses and course placement.

The high school math courses are Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Students will be expected to enter high school with an introductory understanding of Algebra concepts. There are different pathways students can take, such as college prep. and accelerated. Students in a college prep. pathway will be enrolled in CC Algebra 1,

Geometry, and Algebra 2. Students in an accelerated pathway will start with Geometry or higher. The accelerated pathway will give students the opportunity to reach AP Calculus BC. Additional pathways are also available for students interested in other advanced math courses such as AP Statistics.

The next few years will be exciting as we learn about all the new opportunities available through the Common

Core. It is very important to know that students will need support in these transition years. Our secondary students will be moving into a new set of standards and courses in the midst of their K-12 schooling. SGUSD will continue to explore and find the best ways to support students.

Please join us at Jefferson Middle School on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. for a joint Jefferson Middle

School/Gabrielino High School presentation on our new mathematics pathways. We welcome your questions and concerns as we continue to support your child through this new system.

Sincerely,

Dear Parent,

It is the goal of the San Gabriel Unified School District (SGUSD) to place students in appropriate class levels and ensure students graduate from high school college and career ready. The Common Core State Standards

(CCSS) are an outstanding vehicle that will enable all students to reach that goal. As the district transitions into the Common Core State Standards, there will be many changes in mathematics courses and course placement as a result of the rigor and progression of the Common Core State Standards.

Middle school courses include Common Core (CC) Math 6, Common Core (CC) Math 7, and Common Core

(CC) Math 8. The California Department of Education adopted CC Math 8 as the eighth grade course because of the rigorous content. This sequence of courses will prepare our students well for the new rigor of the

Common Core high school courses.

There will be two pathways at middle school: college prep. and accelerated. Your child will be placed in one of these pathways, accordingly. All grade 6 students will be enrolled in CC Math 6. At the end of Grade 6, students will take a placement test. These scores will be used as one of the criteria to make decisions on placement in either a college prep. or accelerated pathway. Middle school students will continue to have the opportunity to accelerate their math courses to reach higher math courses at the high school level, such as AP

Calculus AB and AP Statistics and Probability.

years. This new accelerated pathway is more demanding than the former accelerated pathway. Students who do not accelerate at the middle school level will have opportunities at the high school level.

The next few years will be exciting as we continue to implement the new opportunities available through the
