ways. This can be a different colour,
style of writing, forwards and
backwards…you choose!

Write your spelling words out
carefully. Consonants are worth 2
points; vowels are worth 1 point.

Write your words in a spiral – do your
spiral three times. Can you make them
different? Which one do you think is
best and why?

FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS
Write your words in the fanciest
script you can. Make sure your writing
is neat and we can read it.
Can you find a word which rhymes with
your spelling word? Write your spelling
word and the rhyming word beside it!
Write your words forwards then
backwards then forwards again. Try
using a different colour for each time
you write the word.
Work with a partner. Your partner
asks you to spell one of your words. If
the word is spelt correctly, the
appropriate mark is placed on a
noughts and crosses grid. If wrong, no
mark is written but the mistake is
explained and the correct spelling
shown. Take turns to play the game.

Write your words so that they go
across and down, eg

TELEPHONE WORDS
Find two of your words with the same
letter in them and write them so they
criss cross.
Write your spellings like a pyramid.
This time, write the easiest spelling
word once at the top of your pyramid,
then the next easiest twice
underneath, then the next three times
and so on so that you write the word
you find trickiest the most often to
make the base of your pyramid!
STORY STORY
Translate your words into numbers
from the phone keypad, eg example
3926753. Make sure you write the
word then the translated number
beside it!
Write your words as if they were
steps, adding one letter at a time. You
can use squared paper for this activity
if you want!
Write a story using ALL of your
spelling words. Be sure to underline
your spelling words in your paragraph.
WORDS WITHOUT VOWELS
CROSSWORD
AMBIDEXTROUS
Write your spelling words on a list, but
replace all the VOWELS with a line.
Then go back to the beginning of your
list and see if you can fill in the
correct missing VOWELS.
Using squared paper, make a
crossword using your spelling words.
Definitions are written below to form
the clues. Bring your crossword into
school to swap with someone else in
your spelling group.
Write your words out once using the
hand you normally write with then try
writing your words again in a column
beside them using the hand you don’t
normally use to write. Will we be able
to tell which hand you used?
