THE AGA KHAN ACADEMY The Debate Society [Type the document subtitle] Raeesa and Reaa 10/8/2012 CAS The Debate Society Proposal Proposal # 3 Executive summary The Debate Society will be a platform for formal debate, a society where all interested students and teachers are free to express their views. What? The Debate Society will encourage and facilitate open-minded discussions about various issues. The structure of the debate will be as follows: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) There will be three speakers for and three speakers against the motion There will be one moderator There will be three volunteers who will help in logistical aspects MYP and DP students are all welcome The audience will also play a stimulating role in the debate as they will ask questions and vote for their preferred team as well. These debates will usually take place on weekends unless specified otherwise by a faculty advisor The Debate Society also proposes to go on excursions in order to attend various debates around the city, country or world (if possible), possibly as spectators or as participants. The Debate Society will provide training to the participants so that they can participate in various competitions. The Debate Society will also introduce various forms and styles of debate. Debaters will grow to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded and reflective. Aim: To create a culture of healthy argument and a spirit of questioning in the academy. When we are asked to question and argue different perspectives of an issue we can learn to think from a bird’s-eye view. We will learn to examine an issue from every angle and think and argue logically. We will also learn to detect fallacies in various arguments. This is a learning endeavor and we know that we will benefit from it as will this academy for its years to come. Who? Raeesa and Reaa will head the debate. On a rotation basis we will have students participate and if a student is disinterested he may choose not to debate. The audience is also an important part of the debate; hence, it is also a form of participation. In a way, the entire school will be involved, if not affected by the birth of The Debate Society. When? Debate Society meets will be held every weekend, on Saturday nights. Where?
