Wisconsin Student Learning Objective (SLO) Example After reviewing data and identifying the student population for whom the SLO will apply, create a Student Learning Objective. Submit the SLO Plan to your evaluator prior to the Planning Session. Subject Area/Grade Level th Health Education: 5 Grade Human Growth and Development (HGD) Baseline Data and Rationale: (Why did you choose this objective? What evidence can you provide related to your current student population’s baseline abilities as it relates to this goal?) th Prior to teaching the updated 5 human growth and development unit and administering the pre-assessment, it appears that only th 20% of the 5 grade student population is currently performing at a proficient level. The primary objective for Human Growth and Development is to provide clear, consistent and straightforward guidance on the essential minimum, core content for sexuality education that is age-approprate and students grades K-12. (National Sexuality Education Standards: Core Content and Skills k-12) The education and guidance provided by parents, in combination with accurate and age appropriate human growth and development provided in schools, are important factors to promote health and well-being of young people. Comprehensive sexuality education refers to sexualtiy education on a range of topics that begin in kindergarten and continues through grade 12. According to SIECUS (2001) “Comprehensive sexualtiy education has four main goals: To provide accurate information about human sexuality To provide an opportunity for young people to develop and understand their values, attitudes, and beliefs about sexuality To help young people develop relationships and interpersonal skills To help youg people exercise responsibility regarding sexual relationships, inclucing addressing abstinence, pressures to become prematurely involved with sexual intercourse, and the use of contraception and other sexual health measures.” (Human Growth and Development Resource Packet/Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction) th The primary objective for the 5 grade HGD unit is to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need regarding the following topics: 1. Describe the male and female reproductive systems including body parts and their functions. 2. Identify medically accurate information about female and male reproductive anatomy. 3. Explain the physical, social and emotional changes that occur during puberty and adolescence. 4. Describe how friends, family, media, society and culture can influence ideas about body image. 5. Identify medically accurate information and resources about puberty and personal hygiene. 6. Explain ways to manage the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty. 7. Explain how the timing of puberty and adolescent development varies considreably and can still be healthy. 8. Identify parents or other trusted adults of whom students can ask questions about puberty and adolescent health issues.\ 9. Describe how puberty prepares human bodies for the potential to reproduce. (National Sexuality Education Standards for Grade Level 3-4-5: Core Content and Skills) Increasing our students’ human growth and development knowledge and skills is a key component in this SLO. Learning Content and Grade Level: (What content will the SLO address? What appropriate standards relate to this goal?) Wisconsin Health Education Standards: Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health. Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media and technology and other factors on health behaviors Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health. Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks Student Population: (Who are you going to include in this objective? Indicated in the rationale above?) th This SLO goal will apply to all 5 grade students unless their parent and/or guardian in written form opts their child(ren) out of the HGD unit. Targeted Growth: (What is your goal for student growth?) 70% of the students (53 out of 76) will demonstrate proficiency on the human growth and development post-assessment administered in May. Interval: (How long will you focus on this objective?) This SLO goal will span from October through May, requiring students to comprehend concepts, analyze influence, demonstrate the ability to access valid information and to practice health-enhancing behaviors. th October: The 5 grade HGD unit will consist of approximately 3.5 hours of foucessed instruction. November-April: Periodic review of instructional lessons to check for retention th May: The 5 grade students will complete for the second time the same HGD post-assessment. Assessment/Evidence Source(s): (What assessments and/or evidence sources will you use for ongoing measurement of student progress toward your goal?) th Students will complete an initial pre-assessment prior to teaching the 5 grade HGD unit to determine the following benchmarks: 1. (National Sexuality Education Standards for Grade Level 3-4-5: Core Content and Skills) Formative assessments will be given periodically to check student retention of the core content and skills. SLO Goal Statement: (Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Results-based, and Time-bound) th By the end of May, 70% of 5 grade students will demonstrate proficiency in the Human Growth and Development (HGD) postassessment benchmarks using the teacher designed assessment. Instructional/Leadership Strategies and Support: (What methods or interventions will you use to support this objective?) Determine the baseline pre-assessment scores 1x monthly meetings of classroom teacher and health education teacher to determine gaps in student learning. Utilize skill based lessons to meet the benchmarks to include Updated video, PowerPoint and activities presented in the updated HGD curriculum 1. Increase the use of visual aids during the HGD presentation regarding the male and female reproductive systems. 2. Allow enough time for the pre and post assessments. 3. Review the correct answers to the HGD post-assessment with students at the end of the lesson. 4. Consider having both a male and female educator facilitate all HGD instruction, especially when the boys and girls are separated according to gender at the beginning of the HGD unit. At the end of the year the 5th grade teachers and the health educator meet to confirmed that the above curriculum was well received by the students. Attendance at professional development conferences focusing on Sexuality Education and Human Growth and Development.
