Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church
Detroit Renaissance District 22nd Celebration Honoring
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Sunday, January 10, 2016
Trenton First United Methodist Church, 3:00 p.m.
Dear Drum Major for Justice Awardees (1995-2015),
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed, talked, and demonstrated to build a "World house."
"This is the great new problem of mankind. We have inherited a big house, a great 'World
house' in which we have to live together - black and white, Easterners and Westerners,
Gentiles and Jews, Catholics and Protestants, Moslem and Hindu, a family unduly separated
in ideas, culture, and interests who, because we can never again live without each other,
must learn, somehow, in this one big world, to live with each other." (MLK, 1964)
We invite you to help build the "World House" in three ways.
1 - Attend the 22nd MLK Celebration on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. The
celebration will feature inspiring music, an original "World House" drama, and presentation of
scholarships and awards followed by refreshments. We are pleased to be "downriver" for the first
time in our 22 years.
2 - Nominate a clergy and/or layperson whose actions demonstrate a commitment to the values of
Rev. King and building a "Great World House" to be named a "Drum Major for Justice." (Please
submit a one page Nomination describing your nominee's actions honoring Rev. King's values.)
Nominations must be emailed or postmarked on November 1, 2015 or earlier.
Send them to: Rich Peacock (248-321-7480)
rjpeacock@wowway.com or 40198 Riverbend, Sterling Heights, MI 48310
3 - Make a financial contribution to the MLK Scholarship Fund now. The costs of college
education have increased; therefore, we want to give scholarships of up to $1,000. Your gift is an
investment in future generations who can honor Dr. King and make a faithful difference.
Checks should be made payable to "Detroit Renaissance District, marked "MLK," and
mailed by December 1st to: Detroit Renaissance District,
8000 Woodward Avenue,
Detroit, MI 48202
We thank you for your efforts to help include United Methodists in a beautiful "World House" with
justice and peace for all.
