Information for Allen Beauchamp’s special Sunday Social Ride (Infrastructure Mystery Tour) on October
11 is in the current newsletter. Be sure to take a moment and view the 5 minute video. We already have
3 articles for the DEC/JAN newsletter and need additional information. You are welcome to submit
videos, pictures and articles.

OCT Wednesday afternoons Rick’s Road Bike Ride – Skip Fleming
17 OCT Bear Creek Trail Ride (west of Denver). Meet at the Woodmen & I-25 Park N Ride to carpool.
Ride begins at the Aspen Grove Trail Head in Littleton, CO. 40-mile scenic ride via the Mary
Carter Greenway trail, the Bear Creek trail and C-470 Bikeway West to Morrison, CO and back.
Brief lunch stop at the The Cow Eatery http://thecoweatery.com in Morrison (next to Bear Creek
on the Trail).
25 OCT Progressive Dinner Ride – Bill Gast
Bill has 3 people that volunteered to host. Be nice to have a host closer to downtown COS. He
plans to ride in the Broadmoor. CSCC provides the food (Salads/Appetizers, Entre and Desserts).
Ride begins at noon at Acacia Park. RSVP coming this week.

Holiday Ride to see the Christmas Lights – need a ride leader
12 DEC Holiday Party (Saturday Night) – Bill Gast
The party location is the Pioneer Museum. Attendance is limited to 100 people. The food will be
a partial potluck (Garden of the Gods Gourmet will provide an entree), similar to this summer’s
picnic. Attendees are requested to bring a potluck (salad, side dish or dessert) And, BYOB white
wine or beer only. The cost for this event will use tiered pricing, and begins at $10 per club
member. The tiered pricing increments and timeframes will be published. The Holiday Party is a
dress up affair. Historical personalities that may make an appearance are General Palmer,
Queen Palmer, Zeb Pike and race car driver Al Unser. For other dress-up options, check out the
characters in the three (3) “Night at the Museum” movies. Prize!

Chick-fil-A Patriot’s Festival and Ride For Heroes – Dale Campbell & Bill Gast
The annual Chick-Fil-A Patriots Festival on September 12 was an excellent event. They enjoyed perfect
weather this year, enabling the large number of ride/run/walk participants and attendees to enjoy the
many events of the Festival. A highlight was speaker James (Jim) Downing, 102 year old Pearl Harbor
survivor and the 6th person in the Navigators. CSCC provided Ride Ambassadors, Course Marshals and
organizational volunteers to help support this fund raising effort. Bill Gast pointed out that Chick-fil-A
provided credit to purchase meals for CSCC meetings in exchange for CSCC course marshal support for
the Ride For Heroes, similar to the St. Patty’s Ride course marshal support. Torie was expecting 40 club

members to volunteer as Course Marshals. However, she was disappointed at the poor turnout and
support from CSCC.
3 OCT Fall Color Ride – Janine Hegeman / Dave VanDerWege
Janine says that a fat bike was the best way to experience this fun ride. 11 riders participated. Fall colors
were lovely and the participants enjoyed plenty of sunshine at the beginning of the ride. However, fog in
Colorado Springs provided challenges and mist at the end of the ride. Dinner at Rudy’s was fun and the
BBQ was delicious. Dave would like to repeat this adventure in 2016; maybe over a weekend. The ride
started at the KOA (parking/bathrooms). KOA has cabins that could extend the event. Dave provided
SAG and met people at St. Peter’s Dome for a snack. The watermelon was excellent.
Officer Elections – Charlie Czar
CSCC By-laws state that the election of bike club officers (24-month terms) shall take place in November
by paper or electronic website ballot. The election shall be held by secret ballot from a slate chosen by
the nominating committee.

Changes are coming for CSCC: Al Brody (Advocacy) expects to be “traveling” and Jean Zeh will leaving
her Ride Planning committee position. The 21C library has great meeting rooms that may be an option
for CSCC Board meetings.
BVBF – Aaron Rosenthal
The Buena Vista Rotary is taking over the 2016 BVBF. Aaron received the signed MOU from the Rotary
and they agreed to pay CSCC $2 per rider for the first year BVBF and $1 for an additional 3 years.
The club will provide mentoring and volunteering.
IHSMB (Idaho Hot Springs Mountain Bike Route) - Aaron Rosenthal & Janet Oliver
Adventure Cycling created the route; 2014 was the first official season. The route combines Forest
Service roads; paved roads and 4 single track options (brutal). The main route was pretty rideable with
only a small amount of single track. The circular route covers 517 miles. The total distance Janet and
Aaron rode was 826 miles over 24 days; June 24 start – pretty cold and July 17 finish - hot!
Some people may take 2 weeks to complete this adventure.

There are 340 Hot Springs in Idaho; the most hot springs in a state in the US! Nevada is second with the
most hot springs. There are 130 “soakable” hot springs; 42 along their route. Janet and Aaron enjoyed
12 of these hot springs. They also swam in 5 lakes and streams, which were surprisingly warm.
Janet and Aaron used BOB trailers and two bear-proof containers. There were natural forces to contend
with; fires, avalanches, downed trees that blocked the road and lightning storms. During one lightning
storm, they saw a fire in the crown of tree 50 feet away from their tent. They stomped on the sparks!
The first week of the trip was pretty remote; they had food to last one week in the bear containers.
During their journey they met a group of 6 cyclists (3 couples from Colorado). There were mosquitoes,
bald eagle, deer and wildflowers. It was easy camping from “wild” camp sites and other designated
camp sites. They filtered their water.
Janet and Aaron also enjoyed a 2-day backpack trip Craters of the Moon. Aaron’s hiking boots gave out
which caused them to shorten the backpack trip.
They were asked, “Would you change anything with the approach you took?” They are constantly
evaluating items and how much to pack for their trips, as well as the method of transporting their
possessions. They discussed contingency plans for the event of closed roads due to fire or encounters
with fire. When asked if the adventure could be ridden on a cross-bicycle. The answer is yes and a front
shock is very nice. You do not have to ride a full suspension bike. Janet and Aaron did not experience
mechanical issues. The maps have suggested timeframes to ride. One example is the end of AUG until
mid SEP as prime time.
All meeting attendees enjoyed the slide show w/music.

Nationally 12th for the entire National Bike Challenge

Announcements from the Floor
Dave VanDerWege stated that CSCC needs to publish our National Bike Challenge accomplishments on
the CSCC website as well as Colorado Springs Facebook, The Gazette, OutThere; Colorado Springs city
website, etc. This information is valuable -- Governor Hickenlooper is providing $100 million over 4
years for bicycle infrastructure.
Charlie attended the Santa Fe Trail meeting to address easement renewal. The Air Force Academy and El
Paso County are working to open part of New Santa Fe Trail that is a 7-mile section of trail on the Air
Force Academy which was closed in May 2015 for tighter security. He referred to Wayne Heilman’s
article in The Gazette. We need to create a transportation corridor for bicyclists and runners like the
Interstate-25 and the railroad transportation corridors through the AFA. Darryl Glenn, AFA graduate and
El Paso County Commissioner, is encouraging them to open up access for bicycle transportation. Retired
military people at the meeting asked about the security at the 2 points in the security parameter. A
discussion talked about the topic of moving the museum/gift shop to the B-52 Bomber Park.
Dave states that CSCC needs to step up, since we are a bicycling a minority transportation group. The
interstate highway and railroads have easy access on Air Force Academy property. Walkers, runners and
bicyclists need to speak up. Information from the National Bike Challenge helps bicyclists’ ranking with

the league. It’s all about funding & money. CSCC / National Bike Challenge has transport & recreation
information; they just need to get this information out in front for visibility.
Another idea is to collect STRAVA data for Colorado as well as other apps that collect bicycling data.

Barry Wick provided information about Hal Aqua and the Lost Tribe which is performing Saturday, OCT
17 at 7pm.
IMBA's Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day – Allen Beauchamp
Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day strives to encourage communities in the USA and around the world to
join together and ride mountain bikes with kids. Allen says the Colorado Springs Take a Kid Mountain
Biking Day at the Prairie Skipper 1 facility at Cheyenne Mountain State Park on Saturday, October 3 had
115 kids and 130+ people participate. He plans to organize a yearly event.
As a result of enjoying the mountain biking trails and location for Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day, Allen
Beauchamp, Ben Loyall with Pedals & Pints took care of reserving the Prairie Skipper 1 facility at
Cheyenne Mountain State Park on Saturday, October 10th from 1:00pm until 9:00pm. They are
extending an invitation to SoCo Velo, Kids on Bikes and Medicine Wheel Trail Advocates and CSCC
members to join the fun. There is no fee beyond the CO State Park fee of $7. Prairie Skipper has private
parking.
They are asking that people be self-sufficient with what they'd like to grill and to bring a side dish or
something to share along with plastic plates/silverware etc., just trying to keep it as simple as possible.
They will have charcoal in the BBQs and light grills around 4 to 5pm. CMSP limits alcohol in the park to
the 3.2 variety.
There will be hiking and mountain biking for beginners to advanced mountain bikers. This super-casual
event will have rides happening all afternoon, nothing structured. Ben and I will have his truck and my
van available for "shuttle service" from the lower parking lot to the Prairie Skipper facility as needed so
that folks who want a beginner ride without the killer slog up the hill can have that available.

Pikes Peak Summit House Public Open House – Allen Beauchamp
The City of Colorado Springs and the design team, RTA Architects, for the Summit Complex project are
seeking input to the initial concepts for the new visitor center atop Pikes Peak. Citizens and interested
parties are invited to attend the presentation and open house and provide feedback. The date is
Wednesday, October 7 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. with presentations at 5 and 6 p.m. at the Garden of Gods
Trading Post.

In the next 2 years, the city will scrape off all of the buildings at the top of Pikes Peak. Then, they will
create from scratch a new facility at the summit of Pikes Peak. It is time to get involved!
Infrastructure Mystery Tour on the Sunday Social Ride - Allen Beauchamp
This will be a “discovery tour”, so bring your mountain bike to ride the Legacy Loop area. Areas to visit
are the Pikes Peak Greenway, Shook Run Trail (all the way), Circle to the I-25 Cimarron Trail Project. We
will take an interesting detour to utilize the sidewalk on the west side. The ride will be approximately
12 miles with dirt stretches, maybe even walking stretches. Have you seen the Enchanted Forest? We’ll
ride the southern extension of the Shooks Run Trail. There may be beer afterwards!
When the trail is completed it will travel from Old Colorado City to Powers. And, the trail will travel from
Powers to Downtown Colorado Springs. The Midland Trail is receiving focus, too.
The next Board of Directors meeting is on October 27 at 6:30pm Snacks and 7pm Meeting
The next CSCC meeting is on November 3 at 6:30pm at the Garden of the Gods Citizen Service Center.
The meeting adjourned at 8:18pm.
