ROSELAND AGAINST THE COMPRESSOR STATION BECOME INFORMED AND INVOLVED DO YOU KNOW: A 30,000 horsepower gas compressor station has been built on Eagle Rock Avenue right next to the Environmental Center, two gas stations, one new PSE&G electrical switching station, major roadways, office buildings and residential neighborhoods. Gas compressor stations emit dangerous toxins into the air. They blow up and lead to fires—Williams Partners/Transco, the company which owns this station, has had FIVE fires at compressor stations it operates in PA, NY and NJ in the last two years. HEALTH ALERT Unexplained NOSEBLEEDS, HEADACHES, NAUSEA and SKIN RASHES are just a few symptoms which have been reported by people who live and work near a gas compressor station. A comprehensive list can be found below. Roseland Against The Compressor Station ( RACS ) has reached out to people who have been living with the consequences of a compressor station for over three years. They like us had been told it would be safe. They have told us THEY ARE BECOMING ILL. ADULTS, CHILDREN and PETS have symptoms. Who should you believe - a company who is out to make huge profits with no regard for our health or safety? Or the people like us, who have had the misfortune of poor judgment by such companies and are now living with compressor stations in their backyards? RACS is demanding that a COMPREHENSIVE, INDEPENDENT HEALTH AND SAFETY STUDY be performed! This would include review of utility co-location and air emission tests, health impact statement, and risk assessment. In addition to the above symptoms, the following also have been reported: DIZZINESS, LIGHTHEADEDNESS, VOMITING, and FATIGUE. There have been more diffuse and long range symptoms like CONFUSION, and POSSIBLE ORGAN DAMAGE. WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH OUR WORK OF EDUCATION & INFORMATION!! Everyone: Call Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen at 973-984-0711 to thank him for what he has done and urge him to work with RACS for an independent safety study. June 2014 LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF WILLIAMS/TRANSCO’S SAFETY RECORD. WILLIAMS COMPRESSOR STATIONS HAVE EXPERIENCED FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS WHICH HAVE RESULTED IN HOSPITALIZATIONS AND PROPERTY DESTRUCTION. There have been five fires and explosions in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, the past two years. Two occurred at the same station in Windsor, NY within an eighteen month period of time. One was in Branchburg, NJ in May, 2013. Two workers were welding when an explosion occurred. Thirteen workers were injured, with two of them being hospitalized. Two others were in the same county in PA. Other Williams gas infrastructure accidents have resulted in loss of life, injuries, hospitalizations and property destruction. There was a fire and explosion at a chemical plant in Louisiana in June 2013, which killed two employees and injured 114. Unknown amounts of toxic chemicals were released into the air. Estimates ranged between 31,000 tons and 62,000 tons A natural gas pipeline in Appomattox, VA, which was near high voltage electrical wires, exploded, hurling gas, dirt and rocks along with a 32 foot piece of the pipeline into the air. A nearby power line was blown down in the “gale of gas”, struck the ground and a spark ignited a fire which injured many, destroyed two homes and damaged about 100 others and caused over $3 million dollars in damage. PHMSA - the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Agency (an agency of the Department of Transportation) - fined Williams $952,000 for failure to monitor corrosion which was responsible for the blast. In March, 2014, there was an explosion at a Williams owned Liquid Natural Gas facility in Washington State. Five workers were injured, with one being transported to a major burn center. Up to 1,000 residents were evacuated within a two mile radius of the explosion. Many were out of their homes overnight. Williams has been fined by the Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)an agency of the Department of Transportation-and by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for numerous accidents and for lack of compliance with safety measures over the years, for infractions such as failure to monitor their equipment, failure to fix violations, failure to conduct its own annual inspections. Williams was fined $99,000 by OSHA, following the Louisiana fire, for 3 years of noncompliance with the Federal Clean Air Act. PHMSA fined Williams $952,000 after the Appomattox explosion. Williams also rejected U. S. Army Corps of Engineers safety recommendations claiming the requirements would “needlessly delay” the project and force cost overruns.
