Study Abroad in Costa Rica Spring Break 2016 March 12-19 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE BISI 1214 - 4 credit hours (L, N) (Enrollment is limited) Earn four credit hours of lab science through Northern Oklahoma College’s Environmental Science course offered in the beautiful and fascinating country of Costa Rica. The rain forest, along with its trails, river system, and plant and animal life, along with a nearby pineapple plantation, will serve as your science lab as you explore and study the incredible neotropical ecosystems of this Central American country. COURSE: Students are required to take the following class during the spring semester for a total of 4 semester credit hours. BISI 1214 (N, L) Introduction to Environmental Science (Ms. M. Gard) – An introduction to the basic principles and concepts of ecology. Special emphasis on current environmental problems and control measures. Appropriate laboratory work and demonstrations to implement the fundamental principles and concepts learned in theory. This course will transfer to OSU as BOT 1xx4, a natural and laboratory science (N, L). This is a Spring Semester course; there will be several hours of required instruction/assignments beginning the week of January 11, 2016 through departure for Costa Rica as well as a final project due upon your return.. HOUSING & MEALS: Students will stay in tourist-class hotels their first and final night in Costa Rica, the remaining nights will be spent in comfortable, but rustic accommodations at the La Suerte Biological Field Station in the 1000+ acre Maderas Rain Forest Conservancy in northeastern Costa Rica, which is home to thousands of plant and insect species, as well as hundreds of species of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Meals will be provided at the field station, featuring typical Costa Rican cuisine; however, students should bring money to purchase additional meals the first and last day and snacks. [www.maderasrfc.org] PROGRAM COST:~$1,970 - includes: airfare, lodging, most meals, airport transfer in Costa Rica, cost of required activities, International Student ID Card (which includes minimal travel insurance), in-country transportation, expert local guide and driver & course credit. Student will be responsible for: OK airport transfers, miscellaneous spending money, guide/driver/cook tip money, and passport costs. (Minimum extra available funds should be ~$300.) Upon spring enrollment, students will be enrolled in BISI 1214 which will be billed to their NOC account which must be paid in-full prior to March 1st.
