Hockey Tournament - Thursday 6th March 2014 Irchester competed at the Wollaston Cluster Quick Sticks Hockey Tournament together with 6 other teams from Yardley Hastings, Denton and Cogenhoe. On hand to help were some Sixth Form and Year 11 Leaders from Wollaston Secondary together with Mr Roberts collecting scores and announcing fixtures. The pupils spent the first 45 minutes being coached by the leaders. They were shown how to pass, tackle and stop the ball. The games were played on three pitches with parents watching the games from behind the netting on the Astro turf. The games were played with a soft ball to prevent any injuries to the Year 3 and 4 pupils. Mr Roberts explained the rules and the Leaders helped pupils understand the rules by being lenient when refereeing the first few games. The competition was well contested with all schools having some very competitive matches. The standard of play increased with every game and by the end of play, some very good hockey had been played. Yardley Hastings won all their games to finish in first place. Denton finished a close second fielding a mixed team of two girls and two boys. Yardley Hasting will now go forward to represent the Wollaston Cluster at the district tournament at Wrenn School on Tuesday 25th March. Good luck to them.
